Exploring Culture

This semester we were given the opportunity to learn about different cultural perspectives. We were given assignments that influenced our research in comparing Spanish speaking countries and their traditions, similarities, and dissimilarities with those of the United States.

During our search, we were assigned to investigate the Health Care System in Spain. In this assignment I was able to better understand the country of Spain in comparison to the United States in terms of technological growth. Highlighting with slight delay in high class expert medical technology, Spain’s healthcare system excels in satisfying the needs of its patients, more so than the United States.

Spain’s healthcare system producing higher rates in success, as well as higher rates of treated patients as Spain’s healthcare system, Spain system is exceedingly more affordable and accessible than healthcare in America. This assignment allowed me to see that health care in Spain is not only a country in which I would trust medical professionals with my treatment, but also a country in which its health care seems preferable over local healthcare options.

Engaging in Communities

The importance of engaging and participating in your communities importance lies within the need for community evolvement. In this assignment given to compare differences in gender stereotyping within the workforce opened my eyes. Spain society’s having a more “Traditional” role for it’s men and women’s position and responsibilities within the home, shape and influence, the structure of it’s society. Including typical expectations in terms of gender and profession. This is the same in the Unites States, a less traditional society results in variations of gender acceptance per location.

Societies impact on an individual is strong. The individuals within society and their passion or lack there-of, in participating in evolvement of societies traditions will determine likeihood of change within society. A societies only motivating factor of change lying upon its occupying citizens. A society satisfied with traditional standards, such as Spain, may not seek evolvement within their societies culture and traditions.

Interpersonal Communication

This semester we were granted two opportunities to speak with fluent Spanish speaking individuals over video call. During the discussions we would introduce ourselves to our speaking partner, asking and responding to questions regarding our personal basic information. Conversations were 15 minutes in length, consistent with course material presented this semester.

My first conversation speaking with an individual abroad I entered the meeting very nervously. After speaking for what seemed to be a couple of minutes, 15 minutes had flown by. Speaking with a Spanish speaking individual can be intimidating but the consistent practice we received through verbal submissions on LingroLearning as well as, verbal FlipGrid assignments throughout the semester helped my studies immensely leading up to the final discussion abroad, easing my nerves, and allowed for anxiety free conversation. Not always knowing each work being spoken I have learned to pick up on contextual information, responding and asking questions regarding the words I do understand. This usually allows me to understand a majority of what is being spoken to me in Spanish, something I could not say at the beginning of the semester.

In the audio recording posted, I spoke with partner of the activities we enjoy keeping in our daily routine that promote healthy living within our daily lives. We then spoke of our preference in cuisine, spoke of similarities, and shared our favorite dishes from our respected countries.

Presentational Speaking

This semester we were able to practice our presentational Spanish speaking a multitude of ways. One of the ways I found to be the most helpful, was when being asked to respond verbally to questions being asked upon our subject textbook material. The coursework presented to us throughout the semester on our online textbook assignments, I found to be helpful in the repetitive practice needed leading up to more difficult Spanish speaking assignments such as FlipGrid. When using FlipGrid I found this to be the most influential in bettering my Spanish speaking

Initially I did struggle in responding in a timely manner when being asked a question or spoken to in Spanish. Just as in my example provided. You will notice me having to rush in attempt to get a full sentence out. Assignments similar to the one listed, allowed me to excel in decreasing response time.

Presentational Writing

Compositions of work received for our reviewal and interpretation came in a variety of modes this semester. We were afforded the opportunity to respond to many composition types. We interpreted articles we researched for cultural investigation, we watched videos, listened to recordings, as well as studied a number of presentations through out the semester to better our ability in comprehending written or spoken works of Spanish.

As the semester started, I was not very accurate in my understanding of Spanish spoken words. It was hard for me to focus individual words, as I became extremely overwhelmed only hearing words I did not understand. The use of videos in correlation to response, such as the assignment posted below, aided in diminishing the difficultly of Spanish auditory understanding. I found videos to be the most helpful because when you become overwhelmed or feel you have missed something important, you can pause and rewind the audio as many times as needed. This is also helpful in auditory repetition needed in memorizing Spanish vocabulary.

Interpretive Listening

This semester, we were able to practice our interpretive listening skills in many ways. Using FlipGrid to record conversations between ourselves, and a pre-recorded half of the conversation submitted by our instructor, lead to a fun learning experience.

Initially, I found it difficult to respond within the given amount of time. This lead to a multitude of practice runs, and even more failed recordings. Using one piece of technology to listen to and record my response was a difficult task to perform personally. I was able to overcome this difficulty by incorporating more technological components. I found the structure of these assignments to be unique and memorable. This helped as well in the recall of grammar and vocabulary needed in presenting my response. Although I found this type of assignment to be one of the more difficult to complete, as i found interest in it’s completion I was able to obtain and recall the course material displayed in this assignment easier as it spiked interest and succeeded in the growth of my Spanish vocabulary and enhanced my understanding in terms of Spanish conversational structure.

Interpretive Reading

Interpretive Reading was practiced throughout the course, personally I found cultural investigations throughout our homework assignments on LingroLearning to be the most helpful practice in interpretive reading and in preparing for written Spanish assignments, and tests.

As I reflect upon the past semester in terms of my obtained knowledge and growth within the class, I feel a sense of pride. Learning a new language is not an easy feat. Though, through memorable assignments that spark interest I feel I learned an immense amount. I feel as if my comfort level has increased in not only comprehending but also in speaking Spanish learned throughout the course.

Initially it was a huge challenge for me to recall vocabulary words, especially those that were not cognatives of the english language. Understanding Spanish conjugation was challenging but my learned ability to string together context of words I’m able to understand aided in my success and growth in terms of comprehending Spanish written in text.

I feel I will be able to take the knowledge learned within this class and not only use it in the future of my career, but also I believe being able to speak and have a basic understand of one of the most popular worldly languages, is a learned tool and skill that will aid my being able to reach out to and speak with more student’s, from more diverse walks of life. As a future educator, and parent myself, it is compelling to not only learn the Spanish language for my own benefit, but for the benefit of my future student’s as well. Having an understanding of the Spanish language will not only influence personal growth in terms of gaining knowledge in writing, and speaking the language, but enhances a person’s point of view and perspective in terms of societal differences. Having ability to promote a formation in new formed personal and societal ideas and perspectives.
