After reading my submission for weekly blog number one I believe that my expectations of the course were accurate. The texts and assignments have provided an abundance of knowledge and a strong foundation for my future in psychology. The course taught me that it is necessary to understand our own emotions and behavior so that we can truly understand each other. I believe I have grown academically over the course of the semester. My courses are becoming more complex and more relevant to my degree process and my attitude has changed from completing courses as a necessity for degree requirements to actually enjoying the content of the courses and being more engaged. If I had to repeat this course I would be sure to make more time for reading and note taking as well as reviewing all of the jeopardy reviews. A skill that I can take away from this course is the knowledge of self efficacy. I believe that using the information presented in the course I can identify personal strengths and areas that need improvement. I think this awareness will serve me well in my educational and professional future.

I selected this image to represent growth. I have learned that personal and academic growth both require patience and perseverance .

After reviewing my ePortfolio it was easy to select my top three concepts that I have learned about. The first concept was discussed in weekly blog number seven. Learning about self regulation and emotional intelligence was very interesting and I enjoyed taking the EQ test online as part of the assignment. The second concept was covered in weekly blog number six. The topic was regarding the objectification of women in the media. I enjoyed learning about this concept and was extremely surprised about some of the offensive advertisements and marketing that I came across in the media while completing the assignment. It made me really take notice of how frequent the objectification of women in the media is occurring. the third concept that I enjoyed learning about was covered in Weekly blog number three. I was really interested in learning about the relationship between music and values. I also enjoyed making the playlist as part of the assignment. In a previous semester I took the course Women and Technology Worldwide and we covered many topics related to women in the workplace. During the course of this class we discussed women experiencing the “Glass Ceiling”. It was interesting to compare what I learned in that course to the content covered in this class about the glass ceiling and token women being used to negate claims of discrimination.

The above image is a snapshot of my note taking. This is part of my organizational process for this class. It allows me to better retain the information we are learning and be able to reference it later for test preparation.

After reading Sexual Conflict: Uncovering the Mysteries of the Mating Battleground, I have to say that I agree with many of the concepts discussed in the article. I agree that weddings often signify the next stage of your relationship and they represent new challenges to your relationship. In most cases when people get married they would expect fidelity and this can be challenging for some individuals and cause sexual conflict. The article also discusses the various ways members of the opposite sex can upset or irritate each other. Men can upset women by not showing enough non sexual interest or affection. Women can upset men when they seem overly emotional or needy in a relationship.

I chose this image because it indicates some of the ways that men and women can upset or irritate each other in a relationship by having specific expectations about their partner. This can lead to sexual conflict in the relationship. https://twitter.com/relshipmemes

Self Regulation is an important aspect of emotional intelligence. Self regulation is how you react to your emotions. To me Emotional Intelligence is an individuals ability to review and analyze your emotional thoughts and come to a rational conclusion before responding. I often find myself displaying EQ when I become frustrated at work. I will take a few minutes to sort through my feelings before addressing the issue or task at hand. Breathing techniques can help improve your EQ by allowing you to calm yourself before responding to your emotions. This can help prevent emotional outbursts and can help you regain emotional clarity.

I took an EQ test online and I found the results very informative. I liked the way it was broken down into categories so you can get a detailed idea of your EQ.

After watching Jean Kilbourne’s ” The Dangerous Ways Ads See Women” I can say for sure that I am aware of the objectification that women and girls experience through media and advertising. I am a woman so I can definitely understand the pressure that media and society place on women to be fit , thin and beautiful. There is a fine line between art and objectification. Often times the media is less concerned with art and more concerned with sales. I have heard the phrase “Sex Sells” many times and this Ted talk was a good example of this rationale. I was less aware of the point Jean Kilbourne made about the objectification of women and girls leading to sexual violence. I understand now her point of view that desensitizing and normalizing the sexuality of women and children can lead to dangerous and violent situations, especially in today’s society where trafficking and child pornography are so prevalent.

The adds listed above are examples of the objectification and sexualization of women in advertising. From clothing adds to adds for fast food and perfume women are objectified and put in compromising positions for the sake of advertisements. My least favorite add is the last one listed ” Send Nudes” as an advertisement for a neutral colored clothing trend.

After reviewing my exam grade I plan to make several adjustments to my study practice. I intend to make more time for studying in preparation for the next exam. I seemed to have the most difficulty with concepts from chapter four. Many of the questions that I did not get correct were situational examples that identify different types of bias. I think next time I will study these bias’s and their situational applications rather than just the definitions. I also noticed that the longer I reviewed the less detailed my notes became. When preparing for the next exam I plan to study in shorter more frequent intervals to prevent this from happening again. Overall I am not dissatisfied with my grade but I hope to improve it on the next exam.

I believe there is a strong correlation between music, self expression and relationships. Music can encompass a wide range of emotions and values. In my opinion if you share similar tastes in music with another individual then this would most likely indicate similar values. These similar values can lead to the formation of relationships or romantic bonds. My best friend and I love the same music and we have had a solid friendship since 2nd grade. Many of my friends share similar tastes in music and we all generally agree on most moral and political issues and this strengthens our relationships.

I am what I like to call an eternal student. I got a degree and then I realized that I wanted to do something on a totally different path. I enjoy learning so that makes being a student enjoyable for me. I do have a tendency to underestimate the amount of time my assignments will take and I often end up playing catch up. I can learn new material easily. If I encounter a difficult concept I just need to spend a little extra time on that subject and I can typically tackle the concepts. I am relatively confident in my abilities as a student and that is reflected in my 30/40 score on the GSE assessment. I have confidence in my ability to achieve educational success. If I give myself more time to complete assignments then I believe this would increase my confidence as a student.

I enrolled in this course because I hoped to gain a better understanding of Social Psychology and how it explains and describes the relationships that we form with other individuals and our social environments. I expect that throughout the course work I will gain a deeper understanding of Social Psychology and be able to combine this learned information with my prior knowledge to help me advance my education in the field of psychology. The course objectives serve as a guideline for what I can anticipate to learn throughout this course and this information will be useful to apply in my future studies in other areas of psychology. A strategy for success that I will utilize in this class is diligent note taking. I find that translating the content I am studying into my own voice helps me understand and retain the information more effectively.
