Learning Style

STEP 1: EVALUATE YOUR STUDY HABITS

  1. Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class?
    1. What specific techniques do you use in class? During all of my classes I try to take detailed notes on the topic. Also during class I sometimes use different colored pens to maybe make studying easier. Another technique I use is to take notes before class so that I can actually listen to what my professor is saying.
    1. What specific techniques do you use outside of class? I don’t have many different ways to study, but outside of class I like to read over the notes I took. Also if my professor gives a review guide I like to look at that and make sure that I have everything I need in my notes.
  1. Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101).   What study methods work best and why? One class I am doing well in is sociology. I believe looking over the quiz reviews he gives and making sure I have everything on it in my notes helps a lot. I also believe taking notes before his class and just listening while in class helps me.

STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND APPLY NEW LEARNING TECHNIQUES

  1. Identify one class where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions.

Planning: One class I am experiencing challenges with is chemistry. I think some study strategies I will use more are problem sets and going to tutoring. I plan on studying for at least 3 hours after my last class. Also I will try to study for 45 minutes and then take a 15 minute break. Right now I need to focus more on how to do anything that involves math. Monitoring: When it comes to studying for an exam, I think I need to start spreading out the material instead of trying to cram it all in at once. The only learning support that I have actually taken advantage of is a review session my professor held, but other than that I haven’t taken advantage of any other learning support available. I struggle with my motivation to study because after my classes all I want to do is get in the bed and go to sleep. I am taking this chemistry course because it is required, so I can’t go straight to sleep after my classes. Some of the topics I have been confused about were clarified when I went to my professors exam review. With the topics that I am still struggling with I will go to a tutoring session or go to my professors office hours. Evaluating: When it comes to exam preparation I’m not exactly sure what worked well, but if I had to guess I would say going to the exam review worked. Next time I should try to go to more tutoring sessions to make sure I truly understand the material. I have not gotten back my first exam for chemistry, so I’m not sure what I got correct.

  1. Review at least 5 academic tips/resources listed here: https://www.odu.edu/success/academic/tips What is one new technique you could try in class to help you better understand the material?

One technique I could try in class is to color code my notes with a highlighter. I believe that using a highlighter on top of my pens may help me better understand the material.

  1. What is one new technique you could try outside of class to help you better understand the material?

One technique that I could try outside of class to help me better understand material is to walk back and forth. I think this would better help me understand the material because when I just sit at my desk I tend to fall asleep.
