Pre-Semester Reflection

  1. Transition to college
    1. What are you most excited about for your first semester of college? For my first semester in college I am most excited about meeting new people, because back at home I tended to stay in my shell and only hang out with a handful of people. I am also excited about making my parents proud by trying my hardest and making good grades. Also I am excited about learning to be more independent and doing things without my mother holding my hand every step of the way. Lastly, I am excited to learn more about what this campus has to offer me.
    2. What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester? (Think about living on your own, time management, procrastination, making friends etc…) One thing that I expect to be my biggest challenge is procrastination. Procrastination has always been one of my biggest challenges because I tend to leave stuff for the last minute just because I see that it is due in a couple of days, weeks, or months. I also think procrastination is going to be one of my biggest challenges because even if I procrastinate I always get the assignment done. Another thing that I expect to be my biggest challenge is time management because now there’s no bus to take me to school, so I have to plan out what time I should leave in order to arrive at my classes on time. Making friends is also going to be a challenge for me because I’m a pretty shy person and if someone doesn’t talk to me then I won’t talk to them. I also think this is going to be a challenge for me because I like to walk to class with my head.
    3. What other time commitments will you have during your first semester (job, sports, student organization etc…)

I don’t have any.

  1. In high school, what clubs, organizations, or activities did you participate in, if any? Yes, I was in the Spanish National Honor society. Unfortunately due to covid the Honor Society didn’t get to do much in or outside of school.
  2. Is there a club or organization you plan to join this semester and what do you expect to gain from this experience?  If not, why not? No, because I feel as though I wouldn’t have time to do any of my school work or study because most clubs require so much of your time. Although it is a great way to meet new people, I still would rather have my full attention on just school.
  3. Major/Career
    1. What is your intended major and why did you choose this major? My intended major is nursing. I chose this major because I really enjoy helping people. I also chose this major because going into a pediatrics office and seeing what they do really inspires me every time. Also I chose this major because my aunt was a naval nurse and she also went to this school for a little while. Furthermore, I chose this major because I feel like nursing is a good fit for me at the moment and that I’ll do well.
    2. What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you? One skill that I have that makes this major good for me is that I am kind and caring. Being kind and caring is something that is very important to have in this field because you are dealing with many different kinds of people every day and you don’t know what someone is going through. Another skill that I have that makes this major a good choice for me is that I am very empathetic. Being empathetic is a good skill to have in this field because you should be able to put yourself in a patient’s shoes and tell them what they need to hear and not what they want.
    3. What experience, if any, do you have that relates to your chosen major/career? This past May I was able to obtain my CNA license through my school. I decided to become a CNA because I thought it would benefit me in many ways. I also decided to become a CNA because I thought it could give me a little bit of a stepping stone for nursing school.
    4. What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)?  If I am still a nurse I would like to be a pediatric nurse. For a while now I have wanted to be a pediatric nurse because it seems very interesting and you get to work with children.
  1. Study habits
    1. What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college? I believe that the biggest difference between highschool and college is the workload. I also believe the biggest difference between highschool and college is how much effort can be put into homework and studying. Another difference is how harsh the professors grade in college than in highschool. Another difference is definitely how often you can slack off in highschool and not face any consequences.
    2. Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”?  Explain your answer. I believe there is a difference between studying and homework but not a very big one. I say that there is not a big difference between studying and homework because both of them involve reviewing content you learned in class. With studying I feel as though you are more focused on the content and really absorbing it. With homework you’re more focused on getting everything done on time so that it can be turned in on time.
    3. List each class, and tell us how much time you expect to study per week for each class.
  1. Introductory Chemistry & Lab- 45 minutes
  2. Introduction to literature- 1 hour
  3. Interpreting the american past-2 hours
  4. Intro to health professions-30 minutes
  5. An introduction to sociology- 1 hour
  1. Where do you plan to study? I plan on studying in my dorm room. I prefer studying in a smaller space without people walking around because that is what I am used to.  Some potential distractions I can anticipate are things like my phone and my computer. Another potential distraction could be my roommate if she is not studying at the same time. Another distraction could be my bed. The way I plan on preventing my phone and computer from distracting me are by putting them somewhere out of my eyesight. If my roommate is making too much noise for me to focus on studying then I will go to the living room area in my dorm or the library. Lastly, I plan on preventing getting distracted by my bed by sitting at my desk instead of getting in the bed like I usually would do at home.
  2. What time of day is your best time to study, and why? Studying at night is the best time for me to study. I feel as though studying at night helps me retain the information better because it’s the last thing on my mind before I fall asleep. Also studying at night is the best time to study for me because I like to spend the afternoon doing homework, sleeping, and cleaning my room.
  3. What specific study techniques do you think work best for you? The best study techniques for me are going back over my notes and anything the teacher may have uploaded on the subject. Another study technique that works best for me is flashcards because I feel as though it helps with my memory. Finally, the last technique that I find works best for me is quizzing myself to see if I know the answers to certain questions.
