Ranking motives

  1. Multiple Reasons: I think a combination of reasons is almost always the reason. A cocky offender could not only be doing it for them fame, but they also need the money and might just be bored.
  2. For Money: this motive comes in second place because money is something everyone needs, wants, and someone can never get enough of it.
  3. Political: I find this motive to be in third place because I can understand why a candidate or another country may want to commit a cybercrime. An attack can completely debilitate a system or they can also manipulate data as well as spread propaganda.
  4. Recognition: I think this belongs in fourth because a lot of people are driven by ego. Somebody wants to be the guy who hacked into a large company. You can even see this in things like video games where script kiddies will hop on and use software to give themselves an advantage so everyone can see how they good they are.
  5. Revenge: This found its spot in fifth because of the current plague of revenge porn, messing with someone’s academic software, and cyberbullying.
  6. Entertainment: I think this makes sense because people will find enjoyment in messing with people. I think this can also be tied to using cheats in a video game or someone who wants to post odd things on someone’s social media. People always love a challenge as well.
  7. Boredom: comes in last because I do not think people just get bored and want to commit crimes.
