Having a career as a cybersecurity analyst it is necessary to have an understanding of the social sciences. As a cybersecurity analyst you are tasked with protecting an organization’s networks and systems from cyberattacks. One thing we have learned throughout this course though, is that cybersecurity issues are not technological, but they are a societal issue. “According to Verizon’s 2022 Data Breaches Investigations Report, 82% of data breaches involved a human element. This includes incidents in which employees expose information directly (for example, by misconfiguring databases) or by making a mistake that enables cyber criminals to access the organization’s systems.” (Irwin). As a cybersecurity analyst one can have extensive knowledge on the ins and outs of an organization’s networks and systems, but they can not control how other members of the organization can interact with the systems and networks. A cybersecurity analyst needs to understand how to educate and inform entire groups of people to truly protect a system and its networks.
One topic from class that relates to this career is victim precipitation. To help understand how to help protect the system one must first understand how one may fall victim to an attack. This is where victim precipitation comes into play. Victim precipitation is to understand what behaviors lead to an attack. This can help cybersecurity analysts take steps to fix these kinds of behaviors and offer solutions to help avoid that kind of situation in the future.
Another topic that relates to the career of cybersecurity would be the use of quasi-experiments. For example, a cyber security analyst may perform a test on their organization to measure their cyber hygiene and to gauge a baseline on how to proceed from there.
A cybersecurity analyst relates to the marginalized groups who are not prepared for or knowledgeable enough to defend against a cyber attack. A cybersecurity analyst can teach and help protect people who may not be able to do that themselves. Some challenges that may arise may be someone who is completely unaware of the risks that come with working in cyberspace. One example of this would be someone who was not born into the same technologically advanced world many of us have been born into. Many people have inherit knowledge on how technology works, but some are completely lost and may not even be able to open the camera app on their phone.
A cybersecurity analyst helps society as a whole. They help protect crucial networks that may be in our hospitals, protecting credit card information, or even critical infrastructure. A cybersecurity analyst stands guard against the brutal onslaught that takes place in the evolving non-stop cyber battle that takes place in cyberspace.
