How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
Workplace deviance is the act of a person intentionally disrupting or interfering with a business/company to negatively impact its operations. There have always been cases of various businesses having employees who take advantage of the status or responsibilities that their position holds, and that is where the root of workplace deviance occurs. Due to the fact that technology itself is changing and evolving every day, people will figure out new ways to exploit the position at their workplace. Opportunities for workplace deviance started the moment technology was implemented into the first organization. After all, the modern world and its workplaces heavily revolve around technology, and simple actions can affect the company in a range of different ways. All the way from minuscule issues that can be easily dealt with, to disastrous problems that can majorly impact the business. There are many examples of workplace deviance. For example, Cyberloafing, Hacking, Fraud, Unauthorized Access, Destruction of Property, etc. The aftermath of workplace deviance could lead to a loss of security, customers, and money, and in some cases, the shutdown of operations temporarily. A form of workplace deviance that can easily be taken advantage of by any form of employee is Cyberloafing. Cyberloafing refers to the act of using the internet of technology provided by your job for purposes outside of your employment responsibilities. That can little things like browsing the internet for long periods of time, playing games, or more malicious activities. No matter how big or small of an act you perform, it can still affect a business and the people who reside in it. If caught in the act it can lead to punishments like being fired, but with some offenses like stealing and theft, it can land a person a time in jail and a bill.
