What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?
Criminal justice and cybercrime often overlap with each other due to how most crimes today have some sort of technology implemented within their acts of crime. The modern world is technology-driven, and criminal activity can still be physical, but due to how reliant the world is on electricity and how much we’ve all adapted to it, criminals often take advantage of it, leaving police and people in the criminal justice field having to know a certain amount about cybercrime/cyber security due to how often they’re going to run into situations where it’ll be necessary to use. Modern technology has become so advanced that most crimes are solved with the help the computers or some form of technology. The whole cyberspace is filled with many defensive and security procedures like the ones we learned in class, the strategies and tactics used to take down criminals or get information that can further help a case. Cybercrime can be so complex that the local police department will often need the assistance of a person who is an expert in a specific field of computer science or cybercrime. There are multiple roles in the cyber world that can come in handy to help solve a case, whether it deals with digital forensics, data analysis, digital footprints, etc. It also allows for stronger security within users’ privacy due to the combination of law enforcement and the cyber engineers’ ethical training that is done within the field of technology. With the way the modern world is, criminal justice and cybercrime overlap with each other due to how often their fields have to work hand in hand. They both could use help from each other and sometimes they can’t progress without the experience from the other.
