Exploring Culture

The cultural exploration activities in Span 101F have been vital to introducing me to many interesting facts about cultural differences between the United States and Hispanic countries. The widespread tradition of a midday Siesta is particularly intriguing as our society is currently going through a revaluation of the traditional work/life balance. Siestas have been prevalent in many Spanish-speaking countries for years due to the productivity associated with resting for a short time and could be helpful here in America. We also learned that the living arrangements for many of the students in Spanish-speaking countries are similar to that of the United States. About the same distribution of students live in dorms on campus as those that live off-campus and commute. Our most recent cultural exploration has taught me about man prominent figures from various Spanish-speaking countries who are very popular and highly respected. I became more familiar with Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi and Peruvian soccer player Paolo Guerrero and their importance to the populations they proudly represent on the world stage. The journey and impact of Sonia Sotomayor as a prominent Latina to serve on the US Supreme Court is very inspirational.
