BYOB- Alison Dodson of A. Dodson’s
At the beginning of the video, Dodson mentions where her love for retail comes from. She says that her grandfather had many businesses and her mother had a business that refinished furniture and she really enjoyed working with her growing up. Dodson also mentions that when she was about 16, she learned that she loved buying things and giving them back to people. She talks about her educational background and the experience she gained in her field with fashion merchandising. From her internships and jobs, she learned how to take a business and grow it into something more. She says that when she brought up the idea of starting her own business her parents would always tell her that she is not ready. Dodson later learned that the reason they were telling her that she is not ready is that she needed to gain experience working for someone else in the industry and learn the ins and out of the business. I think this is important advice to give to potential future entrepreneurs. Many entrepreneurs just into a business without having an experience and then end up failing. It is important to learn first, before going out on your own. Dodson’s goal and vibe when starting her business is to change the face of retail. One of the ways that she tackled this goal was to partner with other retailers. She did this in order to gain perspective on the market and the competition. Marketing played an important role in getting her started; like more entrepreneurs. However, marketing for her was even more important because her location was not the best, so she had to make sure her branding was good enough to gain people’s attention. I think this is another area where entrepreneurs tend to fail. They do not use or have the right marketing techniques to properly sell their idea to the public and/or targeted audience. One of the things that I enjoyed about Dodson’s presentation is that she planned. She set goals for herself and she made ways to achieve them. As mentioned in some journal entries, planning leads to other opportunities. They have a close correlation with one another.
