According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, ethics is defined as “a guiding philosophy” or “a consciousness of moral importance.” While in an entrepreneurship, it is important to do the right thing. When people start up a business, they often lose sight of what is “right,” in this case ethical. There are some famous company stories that fell and are no longer in business due to ethical issues. One of the stories is the fall of Enron. With Enron, people lost sight of the line that divides right and wrong. People that played big roles in the “success” of Enron had the biggest impact on the scam that was going on. Thus, causing Enron to have such an impactful fall. Ethics mattes in entrepreneurship because it makes the customers or the people investing their time in the company feel safe. A sense of security is important for a business. If a product of idea has “sketchy” beginning, then it will not take off. From watching the news and reading articles, I have learned that if there is even a hint of ethical issues then the business will not prosper.
