Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication
Instructions
Exploring Culture
I have a friend who is full Colombian. Her mom is fluent in Spanish and is her first language with minimal English. Also, there are different ways they do things in their house such as put a rag on their broom and treat it as a mop. Her family is from a third world country and they had to do what they had to do with what they had. It made me understand that being in the United States is considered and big deal. I understood and never judged and I even joined in helping her one day.
Engaging in Communities
In my household, we live up to the saying of “Taco Tuesday.” We visit our local Mexican restaurant regularly and when I am there I speak in Spanish to the waiters and waitresses. I am a little rusty when I speak, but they have no problem correcting me and helping me understand what I am trying to make them understand. On another note, my best friend is fluent in Spanish and also helps guide me and corrects me. Her mother is only fluent in Spanish and when I visit her house I have to speak in Spanish because she does not understand much English.
Interpersonal Communication
I have been told to listen to Spanish music to help your Spanish speaking skills reach newer heights. I have made a complete playlist in my music library of Spanish speaking music. Over time, I have dissected those songs and translated them into English to help me understand the song more.
Presentational Speaking
During class in the Conversar portion of our course textbook, there were many recordings we had to make for assignments and submit them. It was apart of the course and assignment. Also, we had a project we had to speak and introduce and have a conversation with a person or friend. We basically had an interview with our friends.
In these assignments and projects it was challenging to keep the conversation flowing. In the conversation there were many “umms” and pauses because my brain was trying to differentiate between English and Spanish. However, talking with my best friend because she is who I practice all the time with. I overcame these by still practicing and continuously practicing.
