Assignment Takeaway

ATA5: Assignment Takeaway Five

In a way I feel as if this assignment made me feel more aware of the people who were around me in my day to day life. Not just the people in my immediate household and close friends, but my coworkers and neighbors as well. Doing random acts of kindness was a lot of fun and something that I plan to continue going forward.

Overall, this assignment brought me two new friends at work. I do not make friends really easily and so I am thankful for the opportunity to finally find a place at work. I am the newest employee and therefore, I usually keep to myself. The acts of kindness were definitely out of my comfort zone, but I am glad that I went through with them anyways.

I’ve attached my assignment and my experience below.

ATA3: Assignment Takeaway Three

I felt like this assignment was extremely relevant to what is going on the world today. I find that we see case after case in the media of people using racial slurs and then trying to claim that they, “aren’t racist,” in a half-hearted apology to attempt to ward off bad publicity.

I think it is relevant because people need to understand that once words are said; you can not take them back. I feel like people think that treating others with respect is an option, and its gross. Although Michael Richard made a huge mistake that I am sure he regrets, the worst part about it is that he is not the only one who felt like it was okay to say these things.

ATA1: Assignment Takeaway One

This assignment on heuristics was really enlightening to me on the decisions that we make every single day. These are snapshot decisions, and even though they may be quick, I found out that they can still be rooted in bias. My biggest takeaway from this assignment is that heuristics, in a way, are dangerous, and it shows in our society today.

I take a look at the news and everything that is surrounding protests today. There are still people denying that social injustices exist. It looks like they are ignoring them, but because they have not experienced them themselves. It is an example of the availability heuristic that I talked about in my paper. “Because I am not experiencing this, it is not happening.” In the photo below, there is a screenshot that shows just this.

Screenshot of Yahoo News front page that shows how the availability heuristic can influence individuals, even those in power.
