ODU Majors that Relate to Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is defined as a collection of procedures, technologies, and processes to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of computer systems, networks, and data, against cyber-attacks or unauthorized access. Four classes that ODU offers that works hand in hand with Cybersecurity are, Information Science, Information Technology, Engineering, and Computer Science.

Information Science is not only the study of information, but the study of how the information is used to include how it is stored, processed, retrieved, and communicated. Cybersecurity relates to information science because they both deal with managing data. Information science deals more with how it is processed while Cybersecurity deals with how to safeguard the data.
The study of Information Technology is the design, development, hardware/software support and management, of all computer-based systems. Information technology is necessary because in order to keep information safe there needs to be systems and processes developed. To prevent data from unauthorized access in Information Technology, you will need a data security framework with guidelines and procedures on how risk are handled just like the Cybersecurity Framework. Therefore, the study of IT protects an organizations data from being stolen, misuse, unauthorized access, and unauthorized changes. While Cybersecurity safeguards electronic information that has been communicated or stored across the internet.
Engineers like Computer Engineers use computer science, engineering and mathematics to build PCs, workstations, and supercomputers. While they deal more with the designing of the product Computer Engineers relate to Cybersecurity because they both have to be able to mitigate security risk. Also similar to Cybersecurity, Engineering systems are susceptible to malware, phishing and social engineering.
The study of Computer Science is a collection of engineering, mathematics and the science behind the study and creation of computers, networks, hardware, software, and databases. While Cybersecurity is more focused on the protection from cyber threats, Computer Science covers a wide range of computer related jobs such as Systems Analyst, Database Administrator, Computer Programmer, and Web Developer. Cybersecurity is also derived from Computer Science to seek out vulnerabilities and to detect, prevent and respond against cyber-attacks.
