Cyber technology has made life easier and a semi-horror movie at the same time. It has made life easier because we can now download our favorite songs, rent movies from home instead of going to Blockbuster, online banking, store backup files in the cloud, and socialize with people we know or even people we do not know. However, with all of this great access at the click of a mouse, there are people out there that could potentially ruin a victim’s day within a noticeably short period of time. People must be mindful of everything they do online. For example, there are several sites that offer “free” software available for download, or you may even receive an email about downloading free software. The download could be affected by malware and once downloaded and could delete, steal, or lock personal files with encryption making them unusable. Children are also victims of cyber technology. Today online gaming is popular among adults and kids. There are adults playing games designed for kids, and kids playing games designed for adults. One of those games is Fortnite. There has been a case on Fortnite when a predator has reached out to a minor offering to help the child level up in exchange for photos. Once the victim sent the photos the predator sent threats advising the child if they do not send more pictures then all explicit photos would be shared online. “Should Parents Worry About Predators on Fortnite.” Forbes, November 2018, https://www.forbes.com/sites/kevinmurnane/2018/11/14/fortnite-pedophiles-lurk-where-children-gather/?sh=51bec19d60ab. In addition, since some online gameplay allows the gamer to make in-game purchases or games can be purchased from the PlayStation Network or Microsoft online cyber offenders may be looking to hack any account with a simple password. If they are able to access the account, they may make purchases or even attempt to steal card information or anything they have access to. Unless there is an application, game, computer, network, or phone that is designed to never be hacked, cyber technology will only increase the interaction between offenders and victims.
