Cybersecurity Risk in the US and Germany

Cybersecurity attacks are not solely focused in one country, state, city, or town. They are happening everyday all over the world, not just in the United States. Every country is experiencing some form of Cyber Attack. Some of the most popular attacks are Ransomware, phishing, Business Email Compromise, and Denial of Service. One other popular country that also has issues with cyberattacks is Germany.

Like the United States Germany faces several different types of Cybersecurity risk and will continue to as technology advances. Two of them are Ransomware and Phishing. Ransomware is used to deny a company or end user access to their own files. This was one of the leading threats faced in Germany in 2021. In 2021 alone there was an estimated cost of 24 billion in loss in Germany. On the other hand, during the pandemic phishing increased, likely because there was a large quantity of personnel working remotely. The phishing emails were mostly seeking to replicate banks, but most attacks were not successful due to employee best practices or guidelines in place to prevent employees from being deceived.

Other than Ransomware, one of the most common crimes in the United States is Business Email Compromise. This crime can also be extremely damaging to an organization. This type of crime involves an email being sent from a known party as in another employee or vendor. This email usually makes a request either for information or to make a large purchase. This is usually carried out through a spoof email, spearfishing email, or malware. Another common attack which is also common in Germany is the Denial-of-Service attack. This type of attack will access a company’s network and flood it until the network or site is unable to be reached, or the server crashes. 25% of DOS attacks for 2022 were targeting the United States while Germany was reported at 6.47%.
