Final Reflection

  • My service learning activity was dealing with little kids and developing their physical strength by having them do various workouts in the weight room early in the morning one after the other and doing a lot of cardio. I also worked on building their mental by taking them to the basketball court and working on their skills right after. We are testing the mental because after they have already woken up at 6am, they did serious lifting and a bunch of cardio they have to go and perform with weak arms and dead legs so they have to get over that mentally. My partner was Kashif Johnson (person who owns the program) and I usually did it from 6-10am on weekends.
  • The purpose was to develop kids in the sport of basketball and challenge them mentally and physically by giving them tasks like waking up early and lifting weights. He provides a place to work and learn, food, and fun. It keeps kids out of trouble because where I come from it is easy to get into trouble.
  • After reflecting on your service-learning activity/activities how have your values, opinions, and/or beliefs changed?  Be specific. They have not changed at all, I love working out and playing basketball already so nothing really changed. I guess it made me realize how much I actually miss playing basketball.. I miss playing because I was really good in highschool, like I was the leading scorer and I did not get the opportunity to play in college because of my grades.
  • Describe any health related experience you had prior to the Fall 2019 semester. Based on the experience you listed above and in your service-learning experience, how have those impacted your desire to pursue a career in ____________? I have not had any health experience prior to fall of 2019, I was usually always the one being worked out but because I do not play basketball anymore I got to be the one teaching.
  • Thinking about the service-learning experience, and community partner: How do these services relate to your intended career field? What Degree Program (other than your current major) could it relate to? Would you choose to pursue that major as your parallel major? Why or why not? The experience did not relate to my major, It could relate to physical therapy and working out the body. I would not mind it being my parallel major because I like working out.
  • Study habits, How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?  How have your study habits changes? What specific study techniques do you think work best for you?  How do these vary from class to class? A lot of my classes do not require studying so I haven’t  really changed my studying habits. The one class that I do study the most for is chemistry.. I actually study a lot for that class because of the amount of info given in the time period. My study habits have not changed. I usually study based on the type of test given to us, so if it is like one answer only ill do flashcards. If it is just a regular test ill just look over a study guide and those are the regular two techniques I use.
  • Transition to college What did you expect college would be like 14 weeks ago?  What is a resource or activity you have found helpful this semester?  What is a resource or activity you have found unhelpful this semester? What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?  Name something you have learned this semester that will assist you next semester? This is exactly what I expected. I have only used myself as far as resources. I have not been to study groups or anything. I wish I knew that I would have a lot of time on my hands so that I could already try to be in some sports activities or something. I have learned to get my work done earlier and do not wait until the last minute because if you do not know it, it makes it harder and more overwhelming.
