A collaboration between the government and private industry will be beneficial in developing powerful cybersecurity measures because there will be a high degree of protection in terms of protecting critical infrastructure and our personal data from cyber threats. By incentivizing businesses and persuading them to invest in cybersecurity, the government will trigger a growth in the economy of cybersecurity in the private sector. This growth in the economy will translate well into society because it will lead to the creation of more jobs, and new technological advancements which are integral for a nation to thrive. Most importantly this collaboration will lead to an increase in efficiency because government agencies hold significant infrastructure and knowledge that are necessary for modern excellence while private companies bring innovation and a collective mindset to lead on.

How and Why have Politicians or Policy Makers Addressed the Use of Financial Incentives to Influence Businesses to Develop Powerful Cybersecurity Strategies Beneficial to Society?

Politicians and policymakers have taken many steps to address the use of financial incentives when it comes to encouraging businesses to develop powerful cybersecurity strategies. The main approach is establishing grants and funding programs that are specifically designed to strengthen cybersecurity. These created programs are meant to provide financial support to businesses when it comes to the development and research of new cybersecurity technologies and practices. In 2024 the Department of Homeland Security provided about $280 million in grant funding for state and local cybersecurity programs. The State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP) was first introduced in 2022 and it was meant to provide funding for all state, local, and territorial all across the country (and its territories). The purpose of the SLCGP is to help combat cybersecurity attacks such as malware attacks, malicious codes, and catch cyber criminals all while protecting trusted data and critical infrastructure. The State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP) encourages businesses to address and mitigate cybersecurity risks so the government can reduce the workload of the Department of Homeland Security. Primarily, the Department of Homeland Security is meant to deal with tangible threats such as illegal drugs and substances, terrorism, unauthorized weapons and they cannot be efficient if they also have to deal with and respond to cyberthreats and cybercrimes. Due to this reason the U.S legislative body created the SLCGP to encourage businesses to further their involvement in fighting cybercrime.

Ramification of the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP)

Other than the efficiency of the Department of Homeland Security, the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program has significant impact on state and local government while also directly contributing to communities. The funding sent to state and local government businesses allow for upgraded systems, businesses can work with highest grade cybersecurity tools and infrastructure while ensuring public safety. Better funding also allows state and local government businesses to develop and plan more effectively when it comes to cybersecurity. This means organizations can conduct better security tests, improve vulnerabilities and also develop better incident response teams in the case of an event. As noted prior, the government and private sector experience increased collaboration from this program which leads to more infrastructure being developed and critical ideas being shared. Lastly a standard is created, the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program is developed with specific requirements which organizations have to meet in order to be eligible for funding. It speaks for an organization to meet and adhere to these requirements and this program has been a way to keep organizations running at a consistent and high level and this means cybersecurity practices across the country are in good hands.

References

“5 Tensions Between Cybersecurity and Other Public Policy Concerns.” National Research Council. 2014.
