A Toulmin Argument is a paper that lets a person argue their position heavily. Unlike the Rogerian, it does not have to be neutral. This paper can show a person’s position to the fullest and their job is to convince the reader to side with them. The structure of the Toulmin Argument goes as follows: Claim, data, warrant, qualifier, rebuttal, then finally, backing. The introduction of the paper is of course first, which explains the position, and possibly the claim. In the introduction of the paper, it should include the position and thesis of the author. The conclusion is the final paragraph for the writer and the paper comes to a close with a compromise of the entire paper’s positions.
Writing this paper has helped me realize a lot about my writing and my major. My writing over the entire course has improved greatly, which I am thrilled about. At the beginning of this course, I was not wrong at explaining myself or my positions, now I believe that I have gotten better at this. Criminal Justice is my major, so arguing about something I am so passionate about definitely helped me realize that I could move on to being something like a lawyer. Writing this has put this idea in my head because this entire paper, I have been fighting for a particular group of people, while fighting against another group. Overall, writing this Toulmin paper has made me realize the potential I have in the future and now with my writing.
