The CIA Triad is an acronym for confidentiality, integrity and availability (chai 1). Each of these concepts are core pillars of the foundation of cyber security. Confidentiality is making sure the user’s data remains secure. Integrity is making sure the systems are maintained and operating effectively. Lastly, availability ensures that the systems are up and operational whenever the client needs them to be. Using these three concepts in tandem is essential in providing an adequate cybersecurity experience for all end users. All three parts of the CIA Triad are equally necessary, for failure to utilize one of these concepts will result in a cybersecurity risk and negatively impact the end user. Two more cybersecurity concepts, that are not part of the triad, are authentication and authorization. Authentication is making sure that someone is who they say they are, whereas authorization is making sure that that person has proper permissions to do what they are attempting to do. An example of authentication is a password check when logging into a system. An example of authorization would be limiting access to certain files based on user privileges. In summary, whether it be the CIA Triad or authentication
and authorization, these concepts are very essential components within the realm of
cybersecurity.
