The four majors I chose that are offered by ODU which relate to cybersecurity are: Criminal Justice, Sociology, Leadership, and Information Technology. Criminal Justice is the study of criminal law and procedure, public policy, constitutional law, ethics, and law and order. Cybercrime, computer crime, Internet crime, and cybersecurity are now all included in the field of criminology. Efforts to promote safer computing in all its forms will be strengthened by a better understanding of the links between criminal justice and cybersecurity. The growing threat posed by cybersecurity, which needs to be handled, appears to be widely recognized. As an academic field, criminal justice has a lot to contribute in response to this evolving technological threat. Sociology is “the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups organizations, and societies and how people interact within these contexts”. Understanding sociology gives perspective of how people interact, which improves the understanding of others. Additionally, it helps to understand how the social environment affects the way people: behave, feel, and think, providing unique outlook on how they go about their daily lives. The field not only helps in personal development but also efficiency and effectiveness in particular job routes.
An advantage in the field of cyber security is having a solid understanding of sociology, which provides insight into human behavior and the causes and effects of cybercrime. Leadership is an interdisciplinary discipline focused on developing individuals’ abilities to lead. This consists of planning, organizing, directing, staffing, reporting, and budgeting. The leader’s role is to educate themselves and to inspire their organizations to focus on cybersecurity. It is an important function of organizations and should be prioritized. Information Technology (IT) is “the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware.” Security is a field within information technology involving the protection of computer systems and the prevention of unauthorized use or changes or access of electronic data. It deals with the protection of software, hardware, networks, and its information.
