Applied learning plays a crucial role in cybersecurity because it bridges the gap between classroom theory and real-world problem-solving. In this field, hands-on experience is essential for developing critical thinking, technical proficiency, and ethical decision-making. The Cyber Clinic ran by COVA CCI offered me the opportunity to apply the skills I learned in class to actual cybersecurity challenges faced by small businesses and nonprofit organizations. It helped me understand what it means to operate as a cybersecurity professional, not just as a student learning about systems, but as someone responsible for protecting real data and networks.
The Cyber Clinic is designed as a work-based learning environment where students gain practical experience providing cybersecurity services under faculty supervision. The goal is to serve local organizations that may not have the resources to afford commercial cybersecurity support. During my time in the clinic, I participated in tasks such as vulnerability assessments, design thinking workshops, and community outreach. We also learned how to communicate technical findings in clear, accessible ways to clients who may not have technical backgrounds. This experience was invaluable in improving both my technical and professional communication skills.
One of the most meaningful parts of this experience was conducting a risk assessment for a small business client. Working collaboratively with my peers, we analyzed their network setup for potential weaknesses and created a set of recommendations to improve security posture. This required using dedicating time to research, attention to detail, and developing solutions that were both effective and realistic for the client’s resources. Seeing how our work directly benefited a real organization was empowering, it gave purpose to the technical knowledge I had spent years developing.

The internship also strengthened my ability to collaborate and adapt within a team. When our first client unexpectedly dropped out, we had to regroup and pivot quickly. Instead of allowing the setback to discourage us, we refocused our efforts and worked cohesively to secure a new client. This experience improved my flexibility, coordination, and conflict-resolution abilities while teaching me how to maintain productivity in the face of uncertainty.
Lastly, I developed stronger project planning and organizational skills. Balancing evolving project requirements and team deadlines taught me to manage time efficiently, set priorities, and adjust expectations as needed. These skills not only improved my workflow during the internship but also prepared me for future roles that demand agility and structured thinking.
This internship was more than a learning experience, it was a turning point in my personal and professional growth. I gained confidence in my ability to engage with clients, manage change, and contribute meaningfully to a team environment. When faced with setbacks, such as the loss of our initial client, I learned to stay calm, adapt quickly, and maintain a solutions-focused mindset.
The experience also deepened my understanding of empathy and communication as core strengths, not soft skills. I became more comfortable expressing ideas in group settings, listening actively, and valuing diverse perspectives. Working with peers who shared my dedication and curiosity reinforced the importance of collaboration and mutual respect.
Most unexpectedly, this internship opened my eyes to the world of risk management consulting, a field I had never considered before. Applying analytical thinking to real-world business problems gave me a sense of purpose and direction for my future studies and career.
Overall, the Cyber Clinic experience helped me become more adaptable, confident, and empathetic, qualities that will continue to guide my growth both as a cybersecurity professional and as a person.
