The field requires professionals who can make confident decisions under pressure, think strategically, and guide others through complex and evolving challenges. Cybersecurity leaders must not only understand the technical side of protecting data but also inspire teams, communicate clearly, and manage stress effectively in high-stakes environments. Developing leadership skills helps build the confidence and adaptability needed to succeed in both professional and entrepreneurial settings, qualities that I hope to carry into my future career and business ventures.

As part of my LeADERS distinction, I participated in the Monarchs LEAD: ODU Comprehensive Leadership Program and attended the Monarchs Leadership Conference held on February 14th 2025. This conference was designed to give students hands-on exposure to different aspects of leadership development, including personal branding, communication, and resilience. Sessions were led by faculty, alumni, and community members who shared practical tools and strategies for building leadership potential.

I attended three sessions during the conference:

Connecting Work, Learning, and Leadership: Leveraging Your Current Role for Future Success
This session introduced the concept of the “working learner,” emphasizing how students can use real-world work experiences to develop leadership skills. We completed a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) of our leadership roles, which helped me recognize where I excel, such as in organization and initiative and where I can improve, like delegating tasks or speaking up in group settings. This reflection was meaningful because it made me realize that leadership isn’t limited to titles, it’s about recognizing how everyday actions can shape professional growth.

Stand Out in Seconds: Designing Your Digital-Ready Elevator Pitch
This session focused on personal branding and professional communication. I learned how to craft a concise yet impactful elevator pitch that highlights my skills and ambitions. As someone who plans to enter the cybersecurity field and eventually start a business, I found this session particularly valuable. It helped me identify how to present myself with confidence, whether in interviews, networking events, or online platforms like LinkedIn. Developing this skill gave me greater clarity about my professional identity and how to communicate my goals effectively in the digital space.

Burn Bright, Not Out: Strategies for Managing Stress
This final session focused on mental health, stress management, and resilience, important topics that often go overlooked in leadership discussions. As someone who balances academics, work, and personal responsibilities, I found this workshop especially relevant. I learned about practical coping techniques to avoid burnout and maintain motivation during high-pressure periods. This session helped me understand that self-care is an essential part of effective leadership. You can’t lead others if you’re not taking care of yourself.

Through participating in Monarchs LEAD, I discovered that leadership is not about perfection, it’s about growth, balance, and adaptability. The experience taught me to reflect on my habits, communicate my strengths clearly, and handle challenges with composure. One of my biggest takeaways was that leadership can take many forms: guiding others, managing yourself, and using your voice to create positive change.

These lessons directly connect to my career goals in cybersecurity and entrepreneurship. Whether I’m managing a security project or leading a business team, I’ll rely on the communication, self-awareness, and stress management skills I developed through this program. The Monarchs LEAD experience helped me see leadership as a lifelong practice; one that evolves as I continue learning and growing professionally.

Leadership: Monarchs LEAD — ODU Comprehensive Leadership Program Leadership is a critical skill in any field, but in cybersecurity, it’s absolutely essential.
