Mid-Semester Reflection
- Study habits
- How much time do you spend studying for each class every week? The average time I usually spend and manage to study is about 3 to 5 hours per class. My history class tends to use a bit more time due to extensive reading and comprehension as well as my Literature class.
- Do you need to put more time into studying, and for which class or classes? I feel that I do need to put more time into studying for my Sociology class because I am having a hard time understanding vocab and the three main theories discussed in class.
- How much time do you spend studying for each class every week? The average time I usually spend and manage to study is about 3 to 5 hours per class. My history class tends to use a bit more time due to extensive reading and comprehension as well as my Literature class.
- Where do you study? I normally study at my desk in my room to avoid distractions. However, at this time, my family is selling their home, so anywhere that I can place my computer and focus is my study place. Sometimes, I study in the kitchen of my boyfriend’s home ( no one is usually home and he goes to his room) or I go to my aunt’s house to study in her office or guest room.
- Do you often find yourself distracted while studying? I try my best to focus, but I never know when someone is coming to look at my house. I usually get a lot of work done in one sitting like finishing about three to four assignments.
- What could you do to remove these distractions? The only way I can avoid these distractions is to travel to a different place where they’re quiet.
- What time of day do you study? I actually like to study in the afternoon till the night time, it’s the most quiet in my house. My family is either trying to fall asleep, doing their own homework or watching tv.
- Do you feel focused and alert at this time? I actually do feel alert. I don’t start to feel tired till one in the morning, but by that time I have finished my assignments that I needed to do.
- Learning style
- What specific study techniques do you think work best for you? How do these vary from class to class? One specific study technique that I think works best for me is rereading notes and annotating is best for me. This allows me to take my time to understand information and emphasize which info is most important or which info I need to read more about or research about.
- What new study techniques have you tried this semester based on what you have learned about learning styles? A new study technique that I have tried is study groups, some girls from my Chemistry Lab class have a group chat where we ask questions about labs, homework or questions about reading to where anyone can answer the questions. This has both helped me make some friends and help with Chemistry.
- Transition to college
- Has college been what you expected? Yes, college is what I have expected. I took a college preparatory course in high school for four years and took a college course which helped me understand how some things are done compared to high school course work.
- In what way is your college experience different from what you expected? The only thing that my college experience has differed from what I have expected is that everything is online compared to some courses being in person. Zoom and blackboard can be difficult to use sometimes. For example, the first time I used blackboard, I became very frustrated and upset to the point my dad had to help me because he understood how blackboard worked.
- What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester? What has surprised me currently in my college experience is that I feel that I am doing very well with work, grades and having a relax period with my time schedule.

- If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome? I don’t live on campus.
- OR If you commute to class: What is the toughest challenge with commuting to campus? Easiest challenge to overcome? The toughest challenge to overcome was finding my surroundings on campus. My first day going to campus, I had a hard time driving and walking around campus because I had no clue where everything was. So each time I went to campus, I decided to make mental notes of little things in the area to help me find my way. For example, I just have to find the Orchid house in order to find the Alfred Building for my Chemistry Lab class. The easiest thing that I overcame was making friends, everyone decided on the first zoom class to make a groupchat because all of us were too confused so we can all help each other with the homework.
- Connecting to campus
- Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation. I really haven’t a problem or challenge to where I need to use the resources yet at ODU.
- Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you? The one group in the ODU community that has helped me alot is the Chem Lab group which I have mentioned before in this assessment. We really do help each other in my opinion.
- Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved? I have not went to an interest meeting for a club yet.
