Final Reflection
- Transition to College
- What did you expect college would be like 14 weeks ago?
What I thought college would be like 14 weeks ago was scary due to the wok. I imagined a huge workload than I actually received. School has gotten easier for me to understand because I didn’t have as much work I thought I would have. I just needed to study for each class to understand.
- What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?
The one thing I wished I knew 14 weeks ago was to keep up on work ahead of time. I had the issue where I would pile up work for one day. However, I haven’t turned in anything late except for one assignment that I didn’t know I had, but that was my fault for not checking. Piling up work for one day created a lot of stress for me.
- What is a resource or activity you have found helpful this semester?
One resource that I found useful was the writing center. I am an okay writer, but it could be better. Through being in college and writing papers, the writing center helped me go over my papers to fix my mistakes. Fixing the mistakes on my papers, my papes grew into A papers.
- What is a resource or activity you have found unhelpful this semester?
One resource I found unhelpful was math tutoring. I don’t have a math class this semester besides a little bit of math in my chemistry class. So I found no point in using this class to help me.
- Name something you have learned this semester that will assist you next semester?
One thing I learned this semester is don’t pile up on work and I believe this will help me next semester. Avoiding piling up work will allow me to focus more deeply into my assignments. That focus can allow the assignments to score higher in the grade book.
- Study Habits
- How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?
The amount of time I spent studying now for my classes are about 5-6 each per week. In the beginning of the semester, I spent about the same amount of hours studying as I do now. Nothing has really changed in preparation for class.
- How have your study habits changed?
Only one study habit changed in preparation for my Sociology class. I use Quizlet to go over vocab terms. I also write on my notes of different concepts like the three theories of society. I write how each subtopic and vocab words represents a theory the best.
- What specific study techniques do you think work best for you? How do these vary from class to class?
The specific study techniques that I think worked best for me was annotating notes and study groups. Each class notes are going to be different, so I alter the sub notes to the type of notes I am working on. The study groups have helped through each class by asking questions that we don’t know about and any can help answer your question.
- Health Professions Learning Community
- This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
- On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together.
- This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
Professor White and Professor Moloney have both tried to incorporate health related topics. Each lesson in Chemistry, the professor would add a couple of slides of how that subject affects health. Professor White in history, she added a health topic project where different groups would look at health in different time periods. Each course was connected through the Living Learning Community.
This semester we provided events (Health Chats) for you to hear from health professionals from ODU.
- Which Health Chat was most beneficial for you as a student, and why?
The Health Chat that was most beneficial for me as a student was the VBEMS chat because I am trying to go through the program as of right now. In the chat, there was a nursing student doing the same route as I am which helps to reassure me that I can do it. Also, talking to professionals in that field showed how flexible they are and what they do for the community which is excellent.
