Course Reflection

Outcome:

Besides a lot of grammar and vocabulary, I learned that it’s just as important to know how to write in French and to speak in French. I learned that I need more practice comprehending spoken French by native speakers and by my classmates. I’ve always known I had trouble with speaking in French, but after this class this semester, I definitely feel I have improves but still need a lot more practice. Sometimes when I’m listening to a native speaker speak in an assignment for class, I only understand some of the words they are saying. Sometimes it’s enough to make context clues about what they’re talking about but most of the time it’s not enough to understand what they are trying to say.

Experience:

This semester, I took English Linguistics and Aspects of English Language. In these classes, I learned about some of the same things we learned about this semester in French 102. For example, we talked about past tense and indefinite and definite articles. In my Linguistics class, we even referenced sentence structure in French. We went over how to form a noun phrase and what are its components. Learning about those things in my English classes helped understand them in French.

Transfer:

When I am not in class, sometimes I find myself accidentally speaking French to people who don’t speak the language. This happens especially if I am just coming from my French class in the morning. One time, I accidentally said Bonjour to a cashier. However, I do not feel confident enough to speak French if I were in a French-speaking country. I believe I would be able to speak a little bit of French but I lack the confidence and I feel like that’s important.
