Workplace deviance

The word deviant means against social norms and is not generally welcomed by society. Cyber technology has created opportunities for workplace deviance in multiple ways because it’s becoming more and more virtual and less in person, face to face. This can ultimately increase the likelihood of an employee to take advantage of it and commit acts behind a screen. Proximity cannot be underestimated, as it can put significant pressure on an employee to exhibit deviant behavior. If the employee is sitting 20 feet away from their boss, the employee most likely will not try to pull anything off. However, if the employee is 20 miles away, the employee may feel more inclined to take a risk of executing workplace deviant behavior. Today with all the applications and software that is available to anyone, employees can take advantage of that. For example, using a VPN to access websites that are prohibited from their workplace or using applications to cut corners or even for an application to do their work for them is another example of how technology creates opportunities for workplace deviance. Additionally, photoshopping and editing tools can manipulate images like financial reports, company photos, etc. that can ultimately cause negative publicity about the company.
