Reflection Journal #3

During my 3rd set of 50 hours interning over at SimIS Inc. , I was assigned to create a diagram of the new building the company will be moving into near July. SimIs Inc. is transitioning to move all departments under one roof, currently the robotics lab, head quarters, and their medical company are miles away from each other. The purpose of this task was for documenting physical topology and also for other administrative purposes. Firstly, I created the rough draft portion of the diagram through Draw.io, which is an online diagram software for creating diagrams, flowcharts, and organizational charts. In the rough draft portion, I essentially made sure all the walls, doors, and rooms were proportionate with what the company’s new building is like. Once everything was correctly sized, I went on to  detailing everything that was going to be in the building such as the bathrooms, on-site gym, windows, and office equipment.

After completing the final copy of the diagram, my supervisor and I went on-site to the new building to set up networking configuration. We installed ethernet cables and set up wireless security cameras that used POE (power over ethernet) injectors as well.

Besides drawing the diagram, I also was handed other various smaller projects such as setting up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) the employees that work off-site or remote to have a secure encrypted tunnel communication with the server that is on-premise at the HQ. I also updated an application (Quickbooks) on an employees computer and made a backup of it on a hard drive, then I connected the external hard drive to a virtual machine through hypervisor to create and store the backup to the cloud.

Overall, these 50 hours, I have learned and gained valuable knowledge and hands-on experiences in critical concepts such as networking, Virtualization technology, and encryption.
