Interpersonal Communication

During Spanish 102F, we had two Talk Abroad sessions. This was one of my favorite activities as it gave me the opportunity to really try out my Spanish and see what I have learned. I was extremely nervous and didnt think I’d be able to hold a conversation at all. There were moments I would blank and couldn’t form what I was trying to say in Spanish but I would find a way to express what I was trying to say so that the Spanish speaker could grasp what I was saying and then assisted me in the proper way to say what I was trying to say. In the second TalkAbroad, we were to talk about food and I was able to really talk about what I like and dont like and even asked questions myself to carry on the conversation more, which led to us then talking about working out and how I like yoga. Which was really cool considering I had only prepped to talk about food.

In the video above is what I made for my extra credit video, we were to record ourselves preparing a dish. My son wanted a Pb&J this morning so I capitalized to put my Spanish to the test in explaining how
I prepared his sandwich. I really struggled to say “Cuchillo” and “mermalada” and over thought what I was saying and had to repeat it several times in the video until I could get it close enough. I’m learning that I need to just take a moment to pause and breathe and think about what I want to say.

Presentational Writing

During Spanish 102F we had weekly discussion boards that really helped us learn more about different latin cultures and how their countries do things. It was cool to make connections about how my family dynamic is and how it relates to the dynamic of latin countries and although I may be first generation on my dad’s side, we still have a lot of that culture present. Our writing assignments really let us all connect and share our thoughts. We progressively had to answer harder questions in spanish with each discussion board but it was awesome seeing my growth from the beginning discussion board and then the last, to see how much I’ve progressed in reading and writing in Spanish.

Interpretive Listening

We had weekly LingroLearning activities that would help us learn new vocabulary and test our various skills, one being interpretive listening. I didn’t always understand every single word but I learned enough to use context clues to understand what is being said. As time passed by, it was a fulfilling feeling being able to identify what was being said in the various audio assignments we were given.

Interpretive Reading

Reading Spanish is something really new to me, at least in the depth that we went. Several lingrolearning activities had paragraphs you had to read and then answer questions, it was so nerve-wracking because I didnt understand every single thing I was reading but I learned over time to pull what I did understand and try to break it down to make sense of what was being said. Reading in Spanish feels like one of my biggest accomplishments as that is what I feel i most improved on is being able to read and respond, even if its super basic. It means the world to me to be able to communicate even if it’s on a beginner level so that I can now communicate with family more through text and phone calls in spanish.
