The Quest

Moving Beyond the Game: Student-Athlete Success

Despite being part of a multibillion-dollar industry, success in sports is built on more than just performance it requires strong support systems, especially academically and personally. Through my Sport Professional Penpal experience, I had the opportunity to connect with a Student Academic Advisor at Old Dominion University, whose role focuses on helping student-athletes succeed beyond the field. Through our conversations, I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges student-athletes face and the importance of having structured support. This inspired me to create my final project, “Moving Beyond the Game,” which is a student-athlete development initiative.

The Concept

“Moving Beyond the Game” is a structured development program designed to support student-athletes in three key areas:

– Academic success

-Personal development

-Career readiness

The purpose of this initiative is to help athletes become well rounded individuals, prepared not only for games, but for life after sports.

Why this Initiative Matters

Student-athletes are required to balance heavy schedules that include practices, games, travel, and academics. Because of this, many athletes struggle with time management, maintaining academic performance, and preparing for careers after sports. After speaking with my penpal, I realized that while support systems already exist, there is an opportunity to create a more engaging and intentional program that brings these resources together in a structured way.

PLAN:

Academic Success Workshops

Monthly workshops designed to help athletes stay on track academically:

-Time management strategies

-Study skills and tutoring support

-GPA tracking and goal setting

Promotion Strategy:

-Athletic department social media

-Team group messages

-Flyers in athletic facilities

My Narrative

At the beginning of this assignment, I viewed sports mainly from a performance perspective. However, as I continued communicating with my penpal, my perspective began to change. I started to understand that what happens behind the scenes, academics, personal growth, and preparation for the future is just as important as what happens during competition. This realization inspired me to create “Moving Beyond the Game.” I wanted to develop something that reflects the real needs of student-athletes and provides them with tools to succeed in all aspects of life. Throughout this process, I used my penpal as a mentor and sounding board, allowing their experience to guide my ideas while still developing the initiative independently.

Expected Impact

– Improve academic performance among student-athletes

-Promote personal growth and confidence

-Prepare athletes for careers after graduation

-Strengthen the overall athletic culture at Old Dominion University

Conclusion

This project demonstrates how strong professional connections can lead to meaningful ideas and real-world applications. By combining insight from my penpal with the skills developed in this course, I was able to create an initiative that supports student-athletes both during and after their athletic careers.
