Reflection #1

May 6-20

The first fifty hours of my internship began with a significant task: organizing and cataloging the company’s information technology e-waste room. This room had various legacy equipment, including networking devices and cables that they had accumulated over the years. My initial responsibility was to create a thorough inventory of all the items present. This process involved meticulously documenting each piece of equipment, recording details such as the model, serial number, brand, and type of device. Many of these devices were outdated and no longer in use, but they had been kept for potential future needs or due to lack of proper disposal methods. The company needed a thorough inventory to decide which items could be repurposed, sold, recycled, or disposed of responsibly. In addition to the hardware, I dealt with a significant amount of cabling, including Ethernet cables, power cords, and fiber optic cables. Each cable type was sorted and recorded, noting its length and any specific characteristics or damage.

Conclusion

This task provided valuable insights into the company’s IT infrastructure and the evolution of its technology. It tested my organizational skills and attention to detail and gave me a better appreciation for proper e-waste management and the environmental implications of electronic disposal. Overall, these initial fifty hours were both challenging and educational, laying a strong foundation for my future tasks and offering a practical introduction to IT management.
