Mid-Semester Reflection

You must include the assignment submitted in HLTH 101 regarding your Learning Style Self Assessment

In this semester, some classes I’ve been doing well in are English, math and sociology. I’m doing well in English since my teacher is really good with us and the subjects. She’s really understanding and a good teacher. Math I’m naturally good at and enjoy it and sociology isn’t a hard class. History is a little difficult and bio as well. History I’ve allocated more time to studying and preparing for that class. I’ve also spent more time on it. In bio I spend time with study groups and practice a lot of stuff for exams and quizzes.

My transition to college was okay. Some expectations I had was for my life to change drastically, but that’s not the case. It’s different, just not in the way I was expecting. They haven’t changed my life monumentally since it’s just learning with freedom. For some reason I thought I was going to become a brand new person, but I’m just me with more independence. The college experience has been really fun this first semester, it’s been really nice learning how to live on my own and experience it for the first time. The rush of adulthood is really different and really nice. Moving away to the dorms was really difficult for me. I get homesick really easily, so the first week I was crying a lot since I missed them so much. It’s still difficult some days but you learn to live with it and push through. This was definitely my greatest challenge to overcome. Staying positive really helps, to have something to look forward to.

My intended major is Public Health. Something new I’ve learned about it is the specifics of how broad it is. Public Health covers a lot of topics all over the medical spectrum. I didn’t realize how good of a degree it is to have since it’s so versatile. I like my major, and I’ve been thinking it over and I’m probably going to stick with it. It’s just such a good baseline degree that gives me a lot of knowledge about a lot of things. I’m interested in French as a minor maybe, I might not take it as a minor but maybe a concentration class or something of the sorts. I doubt I’ll become a double major.

A problem I’ve had this semester is getting sick! I woke up with the worst headache and sinus problems, paired with lower back pain and neck pain. I was for sure confident this was COVID, and the ODU resource I used to solve this was utilizing the student health center. I made an appointment for a COVID test and found out the same day I was negative. My roommate has probably been my biggest in person supporter here. She motivates me all the time to do my work and go to class, and we always get food together and hangout. She brings me out of the slumps I get in, and we support each other in ways that only a friend can. She’s a great friend and I really lucked out by getting paired with her. I have not checked out any clubs yet, solely because I’m really focusing on school this semester.
