Allan Blank: Song Cycles with Double Bass and Piano
by Catherine Thieme, Andrew Kohn, Robert Thieme, Jennifer Miller, Robert Frankenberry

Distressingly, back in February, I missed The Lighter Side of Allan Blank, a performance held by Old Dominion University Libraries. Nearly every day I look through his music scores, but wonder what they sound like. Since then, I have scoured the internet searching for performances where I could listen to his works. So far I have not found any local concerts being held (hoping ODU will do another performance soon), but I did discover a trove of videos and audio clips highlighting his work.

My best source of recordings and performances has been Youtube. Below are a few of my favorites.

Allan Blank Trio for Violin, Bassoon, and Piano (2012) | Movement II posted by Duo Favorito

Selections from “A Melodic Tour for Two Clarinets” – Allan Blank posted by Laura Moak

Allan Blank: Little Suite for Three Trombones Mvt II posted by Lauren Husting

Other resources are music lover blogs, or if you wish to stream entire album and don’t mind paying for the experience Amazon is a great place to start. Of course ODU Libraries are incredible sources for the composer’s works, which lucky me has access to all the time!
