Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication
Exploring Culture
The Discussion boards is a practice that helped me gain understanding of cultural perspectives. “Importance of family structures in hispanic families” was apractice that showed how a cultured hispanic family would be structured. It showed how a father would be the breadwinner and the mother would take care of the kids. It also showed that kids would be heard and not seen.

This discussion on ” Importance of family structures in Hispanic families” helped me better understand values and attitudes in the Hispanic culture as well as my own by showing me how families are structured in the Hispanic community, and that made me think about how my American family is structured. Understanding the Hispanic culture and my own, challenged me by seeing that families around the world may have similarities but they are also very different. When seeing different cultures in America I assumed that when it came to taking care of family and the household that it was the same in every home no matter the culture. I understand now that just because a family is in America, they may not always have the same stereotypical structured home that some American families may have.
Engaging in Communities
The value and importance of engaging in my immediate community and global community is because I am married into a Hispanic family. Family is important and knowing your family helps understand traditions or even everyday life.

Interpersonal Communication
TalkAbroad is an activity where we spoke to a person in a different country. The person I spoke with was from El Salvadore. She was a young teacher who enjoyed her family and watching Netflix. We disscussed our likes and dislikes. We also discussed about healthy eating and exercise.

This assignment helped me grow by giving me the experience I needed to speak another language with a native speaker. It was difficult at first because I was a little unsure if I would pronounce the words correctly. I excelled by learning to pronounce more of the words I know, by constantly speaking and listening to her speak. I learned how to understand what is being said in a conversation by understanding the words I do and figuring out what is being talked about. I would not change anything I did during this assignment.
Presentational Speaking
A presentational speaking activity I completed this semester was a Flip Grid at the beginning of class where you introduce yourself. We got to know each other by talking about our schooling and how much we knew when entering the class.

The only challenge I had to overcome was my fear of recording myself. Being a very private and shy person, I don’t do much recording of myself. I did very good with learning how to work the Flip Grid website. If there was one thing I would do differently is that next time I would maybe change my background on the video.
Presentational Writing
I completed a discussion board that represents a presentational communication. This particular activity was about Spanish foods. During this activity it showed different Spanish communities and what food was special to that particular community.

This activity helped me grow by showing me the different meals in different countries. The only difficult part in this assignment was reading while watching a video. I overcame my difficulties by watching the video more than once. I exceled at this activity by understanding what I needed to write. I could do better by writing more in my post.
Interpretive Listening
A discussion board I completed was listening to a video about gender stereotypes in the working community. This video asked kids what they wanted to be when they grew up. They then they had the kids explain what type of job they feel a woman or man should have.

This video was a video found on YouTube that was in Spanish and had subtitles. Listening to them talk was difficult because it was all in Spanish. The challenge was overcome by the subtitles. It was interesting because as a child your views of the world are very limited. I learned that what we are taught as kids can change when we get older.
Interpretive Reading
An interpretive communication activity I read this semester was an assignment on Lingrolearning.com. They had articles that were in Spanish and questions that we had to answer after reading the articles.

It was challenging because I am still getting my brain to adjust to reading in a different language without having to translate it into my native language. I have not overcome this challenge; it is still a work in progress. It is interesting knowing how many words I know and being able to understand what the article is about. I have grown more with the knowledge that I am understanding more of the language by reading and writing.
