I chose the image above because it shows how my objective for this course was to be able to use it in my future career as a Physical Therapist. My initial course objectives were to get a better grasp on social situations in order to give my future patients the best care they could. After the course, I am now not only to look at social situations more analytically but I am also able to self-regulate my own feelings and actions within social situations.
Before this Social Psychology course I thought everything about why people do what they do in social situations was pretty common sense. However, now I tend to not look at social interactions on the surface anymore, I can think about “why did she say that?” “what are her motives behind that?” and “how do I respond to benefit myself?”. If I took the class over again I would be more proactive when doing the modules. I would do the Archived Items on the schedule instead of having to catch up. I would also attempt to reach out to my fellow classmates a bit more. Over the course, I was able to grow in my technological abilities. I had never used WordPress and my Google Drive and Google Doc abilities were limited until this course. I will be able to use both the social psychology and technological concepts within my future career as a Physical Therapist.

The image above represents how I had to “look back” at my assignments and modules to gather my thoughts on what I learned this year. The first thing I learned is the different styles of love. This assignment sparked a lot of self reflection in me and my past relationship as I say in my assignment takeaway. The second thing I learned is how music can connect people. Blog 3 shows how I learned that music can spark relationships and cause individuals to bond over similarities. The third thing I learned is self-regulation of emotions. Within Blog 7 I learned how self-regulation in addition to emotional intelligence is how you can effectively manage your emotions and act on them.
When applying concepts from this course and other courses, you can do so in many ways. With the fact that music can spark relationships this can be put into the styles of love concept as well as people gravitating towards people like them. When looking at how self regulation can be used among other courses, I immediately thought about how self-regulation can be applied to health psychology. Without the self-regulation skills and abilities to control emotions, certain unhealthy behaviors like eating habits and such can spiral out of hand.

The first image was chosen to show that men tend to anger women with infidelity. The second imagine was used to show how women anger men by trying to control their actions. This article really opened my eyes to how women and men go about relationships. I found the information about how each gender tends to lie about their emotions or physical intent to get either the physical or emotional aspect that they truly desire. I never looked at relationships that way, but I believe that that is very true.
Men tend to anger, irritate, and annoy women in several ways. Infidelity and cheating is a huge way men anger women. Men also irritate and annoy women by not being as sympathetic or emotional as they wish they would be. Women are also angered in the way men tend to not help out in the household with chores. On the other hand, women tend to irritate men in several ways as well. Men get annoyed by thinking that women are over emotional. Men also get angered by women when they try to control what the man does. Women also irritate men with the attention received from other men.

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and manage one’s emotions where as Self-Regulation is the ability to direct our behavior and control our impulses. I believe the relationship between the two is cause and effect. I believe the emotional intelligence is the identification of emotions and the self-regulation is how you act based on those emotions. The above image is my results from an online EQ test. I scored a 7 out of 10 across the board showing that I have pretty high emotional intelligence in self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, and relationship management.
Personally, I believe emotional intelligence is the ability to be aware of what you are feeling while you’re feeling it. An example of emotional intelligence would be being able to have self confidence and be able to feel and reflect a sense of self worth. Being able to realize and sympathize with other people’s emotions would also be an example of emotional intelligence. An example of self-regulation would be setting a goal of running a 5K and keeping yourself accountable in your training regimen.

After watching Jean Kilbourne’s The Dangerous Ways Ads See Women, I felt relieved someone is actually out there realizing how wrong the media portrays and objectifies women. I have always realized the objectifying and sexual spins the media has used to sell products. After viewing the video, I am also able to see how men are beginning to be objectified as well but in a completely different way. I chose the ads below because they represent how women are objectified sexually, given unrealistic expectations, and made to fit into certain historic roles.

This ad exemplifies how women are always placed in the role of a housewife. Women are no longer expected to play the cooking and cleaning role as history shows, but the media still saves the cooking and cleaning ads for women.

Unrealistic expectations of women are shown in this ad. Yes, a mother should eat healthy, but why can a women not eat what she wants? Why is it necessary to put a graphic image of breastfeeding when trying to spread health.

Victoria’s Secret is a huge culprit of objectifying women and pushing the need for a “perfect body”. The ad is for a “Love My Body Campaign” but only seems to include one thin body shape. Women in media are only shown in a positive light when they are thin and beautiful.

Weight loss ads always seem to forget that men can/want to lose weight as well. Women are always pressured to join these programs and convinced that they will be “prettier” if they cut down a few pounds.

Finally, the notion that “sex sells”. Why does a burger need an objectified half naked woman and a sexual innuendo next to it? Women have always been used this way, but when looking at modern ads, men are being objectified as well.

This is an example of a credible advertisement. I chose this advertisement because Adam Levine adds trustworthiness to the ad by giving a personal testimony of how Proactiv+ changed his skin. The use of a celebrity allows the public to relate.

This is an example of a non credible source advertisement. I chose this ad because it clearly shows claims without facts. This is obviously an ad used by T mobile to boost their business and attempt to discredit Verizon’s plans. Verizon has valid unlimited data programs that serve millions of customers nation wide.

This advertisement is my example of an attractive source. I chose this for it’s obvious attractiveness. This source is extremely effective in it’s visual appeal of the scene as well as it’s emotional appeal of the loving couple enjoying themselves. This is typically the case because you are able to visualize yourself in their position.

When looking at my Exam 1 results, I was able to reflect on my study strategy. This showed me that my notes were useful and productive considering I scored a 98 on the exam. I believe this will allow me to feel confident in my note taking skills in all of my courses. In preparation for this exam I went to a quiet spot in the library to look over my notes. This is represented in the picture above.

In my opinion music absolutely has a connection with relationships. When I look at romantic as well as platonic relationships I have in my life, I can see extreme similarities in musical tastes. I also see similarities in values and ideals. I’m not one to gravitate around people who do not share the same core values, so I know there is a tie between music, relationships, and values.
In my opinion, the best place to bond with people through music is in the car. I always plug my phone in when I get in the car and start one of my many playlists on Apple Music. I tend to associate each song with a person, event, or memory. For example the country song “Speechless” by Dan + Shay reminds me of my significant other and when we danced to it at my brother’s wedding. Another example is the song “Brighter Day” by Kirk Franklin. This song reminds me of when my team and I competed at NCA College Cheerleading Nationals in Daytona,FL. We blasted this song on the way to warmups to compete and it just brings back such good vibes that bonded the team.
Soundtrack
Speechless – Dan + Shay
Brighter Day – Kirk Franklin
Blinding Lights – The Weeknd
Beautiful Crazy – Luke Combs
Calling My Spirit – Kodak Black
Family and Loyalty – Gang Star
No Air – Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown
Heart on Ice – Rod Wave
All Me – Kehlani
Honesty – Pink Sweat$
Smile – Kirk Franklin
Bless the Broken Road – Rascal Flatts

I chose this image because it represents achieving goals, hard work, and determination. Graduation is my ultimate goal in undergrad and the act of graduating represents the endless amount of hard work and determination it takes to get there.
Academics has always been an area where I have excelled in life. I believe the confidence and self efficacy I have is extremely strong. As a person I am stubborn and a perfectionist and I truly believe it shows within me academically. I aim for a 100% on every assignment I do and the disappointment when less than perfect is achieved is always present. Time management as well as outside support could further increase my self efficacy. I believe if I manage my time well and have even more support from those around me to excel, then my self-efficacy would increase.
My high self-efficacy shows through my academic achievements. I graduated high school with a 4.2 GPA and currently have a 3.62 as a junior in college. I am on a Presidential scholarship at ODU because I have met and exceeded the requirements all three years I have attended ODU. I believe my self-efficacy is also proven in that I have acquired all of these achievements while also being an athlete and being tasked in allocating my efforts accordingly.

The objectives of this Social Psychology course will hopefully allow me to apply the information learned to my future career. As a physical therapist I believe it would be advantageous to be able to understand how to perceive my patients and how patients would perceive me in order to rehabilitate to the best of my ability. I also would like to own my own practice one day, so the objective of how attitudes effect behavior could prove to be beneficial in managing my team. I expect this course to open my eyes to social situations and the meanings behind them. I am not a very social person so this course could potentially help ease me into being a bit more social.
My plan to stay successful in this course involves a lot of time management and organization. I have written down all important dates into my planner to ensure I don’t miss any vital assignments. As I have learned from a past online course, I also want to manage my time well so that I am not procrastinating and leaving of assignments to do the day before they are due.
