Best Place that I have Been
During my senior year my family and I took a trip to Washington DC to visit the African American Museum. For several months my family and I had tried to reserve tickets for the weekend, but they were always sold out. Luckily, school was canceled, and we had the chance to visit on a weekday. I was excited about visiting a place that focused on the history of my culture. While I was there, I was awed by the representation shown and exhibits. There were many exhibits that I viewed that were depressing, but the one that was most dispiriting was Emmet Till’s. There was a video showing a snippet of his closed-casket funeral because his body was badly beaten. It was a very horrendous act of racism and to make matters worse, the woman lied on him. There were also exhibits that made me happy when I went to the exhibits that celebrated artists and musicians in Motown, R&B, and pop.It was great to see how African Americans influenced culture and broke down barriers through music. As stated in my previous journal entry, music is very important to me, and it was nice to see my culture play a huge influence in different genres of it.
