SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

I always look forward to the exploring cultures sections because I am Mexican and I come from a family that does not know any Spanish and not much about the culture which is one of the main reasons I decided to take Spanish. Learning Spanish and seeing how other places around the world interacts with each other always catches my interest because it is important that especially in todays society we respect and know others cultures so we do not accidently offend someone which has never my intention. This reveled that it is important for me personally because I would never want to hurt anyone’s feeling or their community’s so understanding their culture is a way that we can respect them and their culture. I am very excited for my cruise to see the different cultures. Learning more and more about cultures throughout learning more about Spanish, I learn more about different cultures and the Spanish culture. Living in America, you only see one side of things and how it is in America. Through this course, I have learned that while in some places it is becoming more normalized that LGBT people are getting married, they still do not have that right everywhere.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in communities is very important and has great value in todays society. I have not had any engagement in my community as of now but I do plan on it this summer. I am excited to help out in my neighborhood, we have a neighborhood garden so I am excited to learn how to plant different vegetables and fruits to help care for the community.

Interpersonal Communication

TalkAbroad was very difficult for me because I already struggle with talking with my classmates that I saw on a weekly basis so it was a very eye opening experience. I had a very nice lady who took her time and explained what I did not understand, and when I still was unsure she explained it until I did so that helped me understand so I know today. Each activity has had a different affect on me because they are so different, to learning about family which is very important to me to learning about sports which I have never been good at. Doing the projects taught me more about sports than I ever knew because I had to do some research to get accurate results. Mental health was extremely important to me as someone who struggles with anxiety. Having an entire unit on it was very impactful for me. Doing TalkAbroad helped me with my anxiety and it also helped me with my Spanish speaking skills. I have grown with each activity because the more we learn the more I learn. While I still am not the best I could be, I am still learning so it is okay because it can take time to learn a new language and anything for that matter. Overcoming a difficulty which was speaking and sometimes listening was hard but at other times, it was much easier. It just depended on the topic.

Presentational Speaking

Presentational speaking is something that I still struggle with but I am better than I was in my 101 class. I know more about pronunciation which was my biggest weakness last semester and also this semester but I am getting better at pronouncing words that I could not last semester. Speaking in class has helped a lot and helped me get used to speaking Spanish with my classmates that some of them, I had just met but some of them I knew from last semester so I was a little more comfortable with them. Speaking in public with them and my professor has helped me gain more confidence and filming the videos for the projects also did help a great deal. Proyecto 6 was a project that we had to talk about our family and their characteristics. This was one of my favorite projects because I got to include my cat. It was one of my favorite projects because I got to talk about the people that I care about and how they helped make me the person I am today. In Proyecto 8, we discussed our favorite types of food. I feel that I exceled at was talking about characteristics about my family but I feel that I could have gone into more detail about my favorite food.

Presentational Writing

In this Proyecto, we did an infographic about sports and where it would be, what you needed, and more. I really enjoyed this project because it was fun to make using the different pictures, colors, and talking about swimming which was my chosen sport. I grew a lot throughout doing infographics and the designs because it took more than just writing. We had to think about the pictures that we used so that they would fit into and use the right colors so they would look good. I did well in the design aspect but I believe that I could have done better on the word aspect. It was difficult for me because sports are not my thing so it was harder because learning sports in English is already hard for me but it was a lot of fun!

Interpretive Listening

There was quite a few listening activities on LingoLearning and some were hard and others were a lot easier. It just depended on what the topic was and how fast the person was speaking. If the person was speaking a lot faster, it made it a lot more difficult for me because I am still learning but i did understand more than I did last semester. Working on the pronunciation part on LingoLearning was harder for me, it was easier in class because I felt that I was actually speaking and if i said it wrong. My professor helped me. You have to listen to what they are saying and the sounding out sounds because even then, it is still hard to understand but that makes it a little easier. It was much easier than last semester because while my pronunciation still is not the best, it is better and the more I listen and the more I talk, the better I get. For this assignment, it took some tires but I did get it, the more I heard it.

Interpretive Reading

I have grown with each assignment throughout the semester through studying, taking time, and when I do not understand something or how to say something, I ask. The projects that we did and the writings we did and getting the feedback helped a lot so I know what to do and not to do. Getting back feedback from my professor and then having it explained helped a lot.
