SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

  • Exploring cultures is one of the most important lessons, we learned in my opinion. It is important that we learn about other cultures and what they value so we know to respect them and their culture.
  • While we went through the exploring culture unit, we did multiple homework assignments that also included videos that showed us exactly where they were talking about which helped me a lot because then I could put picture to the assignments.
  • Learning a language is never an easy thing but it has always been something that I wanted to do. Spanish was my first choice because my grandpa is from Mexico and I wanted to learn Spanish so I could also understand him more as well. It so understanding the culture aspect and how important it is extremely important to me.
  • When I first took this class, everyone says that Spanish is the easiest language to learn but u disagree. I have taken German before and both are about the same level of difficulty to learn. That was one stereotype that I did have going in to this class.
  • While going through this, we went over Hispanic practices which was really neat and we even got to try some food which was delicious.
  • My family is Hispanic and while no one in my family speaks Spanish besides me currently learning, that is why I find it so important because this also apart of my culture.

Engaging in communities

  • I value helping everyone in every community and try to do as much community service as I can during the free time I have. I have volunteered in animal shelters, food banks, haunted houses, and more.
  • Being involved with the community is important because if we do not have a strong stable community then we have nothing.

Interpersonal communication

  • During this semester we completed multiple writing assignments in class and out of class for homework. We would have small writing on lingo learning and we would have bigger projects in class. One was an introduction about how do we say our name, age, etc.
  • Each assignment through the semester got easier as I learned more and more. As the semester progressed, each assignment got harder and harder but it also grew my knowledge and with some help I can now do it on my own for the most part. Speaking is still the harder part for me. I’m still working on the sounding out of some words and it sometimes confuses me.

Presential speaking

  • Inside of the class, we did many speaking projects and exercises to help us try and understand and learn how to speak it the proper way which I still struggle with. This is the hardest part of Spanish for me, I am still struggling with this.
  • Overcoming it was hard and I am still doing it but through the help of my professor and my classmates helping me, it makes it much easier.
  • Here’s a link to a video project I did earlier in the semester with one of my classmates:

Presential writing

  • Writing was much easier to grasp than speaking and reading. We did many projects with writing in class, lingolearning, and I practiced outside of class by taking vocab notes. Also practicing with my classmates and going through the vocab after writing it down helped a lot.
  • Growing in this area was much easier because of the steps that I did , taking notes and doing the work through lingolearning helped a lot.

Interpretive listening

  • Listening was the second hardest for me, because in the beginning of the semester. It was much harder to understand and on lingolearning they spoke to quickly so it would go out one ear out the other. But it got easier as I learned more and I knew what they were saying.

Interpretive Reading

  • Going through the vocab and doing the readings in class and on lingolearning made it much easier. We would be given prompts and would then have to read them and then answer questions or have to respond.
