Interview a Health Professional

Patients and Planes

The health professional that I chose to interview is Ms. Heather Marks. Ms. Marks works in the health field as a travel nurse. Currently, she is on an assignment in Clarksville, Tennessee. Heather holds the title of a Registered Nurse (RN) and a Family Nurse Practitioner. In order to obtain these, Ms. Marks graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Minor in Chemistry. After that, she obtained her BSN degree. Three degrees later and some years as a Registered Nurse, Heather decided to get a Master’s Degree in Nursing. With these degrees, she was able to obtain her Family Nurse Practitioner Certification. But what inspired Ms. Marks to work for these degrees? In the interview, I asked Ms. Marks this exact question and she responded by saying it was in her DNA. Both her parents worked in healthcare positions. After years in the field, I questioned Ms. Marks on how she got her job, the responsibilities of the job, the rewarding aspects, and the most challenging aspects. In which she responded by saying her job position as a travel nurse came during COVID with the responsibilities of triaging a patient and checking the vital signs. In her opinion, the most rewarding aspects involve seeing patients heal while the most challenging was dealing with the family members. All her degrees couldn’t prepare her for the reality of how hard CPR can be which she stated surprised her the most! After learning all about her path she ended the interview by discussing some advice for future nurses. So, to all the future nurses Ms. Marks recommends starting out in the emergency room to put all your skills to the test.

This interview was very helpful because it gave me a perspective on the career I am interested in. As someone who wants to become a Nurse Practitioner and travel nurse, I am glad I got a chance to learn how other people achieved that. From this interview, I am going to take away the advice that Ms. Marks gave.
