Digital Forensics and Social Sciences
Davin Teo’s TEDx Talk is very interesting as it paints a picture of what it takes to be a digital forensics investigator and how it is linked with social sciences. His story shows the relevance of anthropocentric approaches and focus on people’s behavior and motives, which are typical of such fields as psychology and sociology. The work of investigators is to go through the digital evidence, create narratives, analyse the intentions and get to the ‘person’ behind the numbers.
The most striking thing was how Davin was able to combine his technical skills with his desire to learn more about people. He also stressed how social sciences help in explaining the behaviour of criminals and how digital forensics experts need to understand the relation between technology and society. This connection strengthens the idea that digital forensics is not only about solving the technical issues it is about solving the cases and telling the stories of cyber incidents which in turn helps the society tackle other problems such as trust and security in the digital world.
His story is a great encouragement to those in the cybersecurity field because it shows that the field is not only about technology but about people and their protection and understanding which makes social science framework indispensable.
