Learning Style

STEP 1: EVALUATE YOUR STUDY HABITS: For chemistry, sociology, and history, I write notes and read them over to study. In chemistry, I make flashcards to study for the test. In sociology, I write a review to study. For history, I use the given study guide and fill that out to study. In the rest of my classes, chemistry lab, theatre, and English, I don’t really have to study for anything. In class, I write down what the teacher is saying instead of what’s on the board. I do this because chemistry, sociology, and history teachers put the slide presentations on Blackboard. In my other classes, I just pay attention, and by doing that I am able to complete the few assignments given. Outside of class, I write notes down in order to prepare for the next day so I am not lost in lecture. I only do this for the classes I have regular assessments in, sociology, chemistry, and history. One class I am doing well in is sociology. For this class, the best way to be prepared is read the chapter that is going to be discussed in lecture the night before. While doing this, I write down notes on things that stand out to me. I try to summarize each paragraph into two or three bullet points. I also make sure to write down any name or definition I come across while reading. When it comes time for a quiz or exam, I prepare for it by reading over the notes I took and what my professor said in class. I then use this information to create a review guide. This study methods work best because it prepares me very well, and I am able to contribute in class discussion because I understand what is going on

STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND APPLY NEW LEARNING TECHNIQUES: The class I am experiencing a challenge in is history. I will evaluate text figures and ask my professor questions if I get too confused. I plan on studying around 5-10 hours a week outside of class. I plan to sit down and study for an hour, take a break, and then study a little bit more. I should spend more time going over the chapters and readings I should spend less time on only writing notes on the key terms. I need to make sure I study all the material for the exam. I need to make sure to not only look at the key terms but also study the chapters and readings. I definitely am not taking advantage of all the learning supports available to me. I definitely am struggling with my motivation to study simply because I don’t like history. I am taking this course because I have to in order to be part of the Learning Community. I have clarified some of my confusions on the Civil War by reading more in-depth about the topic. I am still confused about John Locke and the Bill of Rights stuff. I am going to get this clarified by reading more and asking questions if I continue staying confused. Doing the study guide and paying attention in class worked well in my exam preparation, and I should remember to do this next time. I should change focusing more on the key terms and instead focus on reading more in-depth about what we learn in class.

I can try organizing my notes using The Cornell System. Sometimes, it is hard for me to study because my notes are a disaster. Hopefully, by using this note-taking technique, I can organize my notes in a better way in order to understand them more. outside of class, I could try studying in a study group to help me better understand the material. By doing so, I might be able to get a better understanding of what we learned from my classmates. I could also use their techniques to study and see if that helps me do better.
