With the rise of cyber technologies come many great advancements that have aided in making modern life both more efficient and overall better for most people but this has not come without its costs. Cyber technologies have given rise to many new crimes that have begun to make life a lot more complex when it comes to dealing with criminals of the online world. One of the biggest crimes that have affected the lives of many people is stalking, stalking is the unwanted following or watching of an unknowing person or people. Stalking in the online realm is a lot like what we know to happen in the real world except it is a lot harder to trace and know when it is happening to a person, which makes it more dangerous I might add. When online a stalker can track his victim through hacking into their computer and finding their location or by just watching/listening through a plugged in camera or microphone. This, for most people, is an extremely hard thing to pick up on and these interactions can last for a long time and can even eventually lead to an in person interaction which is a very dangerous scenario. Studies have shown that “approximately 20% of stalking cases in Los Angeles and 40% of the stalking cases in New York utilized the Internet” as a form of stalking and other acts of that nature which proves that online stalking is a very prominent and real thing. These offenders are very dangerous and hard to keep track of which means that cyber tech needs to adapt with the times in order to combat these changes. Overall my main point is that cyber technologies are great things that I believe that we as a modern society need to complete modern day tasks except it is very important to remain cautious and careful when utilizing these luxuries.
