Impact of Covid-19 on mental health of students Practice Lab

1-Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on the mental health of students in USA

This practice lab is a collaborative effort among a group of individuals to study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of students in the USA. The group will be using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, including a cross-sectional survey, to gather data on the various factors affecting students’ mental health during and after the pandemic. Through this project, the group hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by students and propose effective interventions to support their mental health and wellbeing.

2-Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on the education sector in the USA. As schools and universities closed to prevent the spread of the virus, students were forced to shift to online learning, causing significant disruptions to their daily routines and social lives. This practice  lab study aims to examine the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of students in the USA by analyzing changes in five key parameters: social life, emotional health, dietary changes, physical health, and stress levels.

3-Key study question(s)

-What is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of students in the USA?

-How have changes in social life, emotional health, dietary habits, physical activity, and stress levels affected the mental health of students?

-What interventions can be recommended to improve mental health and well-being among students during and after the pandemic?

4-Method

The research design utilized both qualitative and quantitative methods through a cross-sectional survey of 1000 students aged 18-25 at two large public universities in Missouri State. Data was collected both before (November 2019-March 2020) and after (May/August 2020) the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Descriptive statistics were compiled to describe the participants’ demographics, academic levels, majors, and state. A survey was conducted to assess changes in lifestyle, place, dietary habits, social relationships, academic performance, and stress levels. The estimated association between COVID-19 parameters such as social distancing, restricted outdoor life, lifestyle changes, and their impact on mental health symptoms were analyzed. Pre-pandemic and post-pandemic mental health was compared and analyzed in detail using SPSS software, which allowed for descriptive analyses through charts and tables

5-Findings

The study project found that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the mental health of students in the USA. The five key parameters examined all showed significant changes after the pandemic. Students reported feeling increased stress levels, changes in dietary habits, decreased physical activity, and significant disruptions to their social lives. These changes were found to be associated with worsened mental health outcomes, including increased anxiety and depression symptoms. The study also found that students experienced challenges adapting to new lifestyles during the pandemic, such as online learning and social distancing.

6-Recommendations

Based on the findings, interventions to improve mental health and well-being among students are recommended. These include health and wellness initiatives such as music therapy, meditation, yoga, and acupressure, which have been shown to have significant positive effects on mental health. Educational institutions are encouraged to prioritize mental health and well-being as part of their overall response to the pandemic, including offering counseling services, support groups, and mindfulness programs.

7-Public health significance

The mental health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on students in the USA are significant, and the findings of this study have public health implications. Educational institutions, policymakers, and healthcare providers must prioritize the mental health and well-being of students during and after the pandemic to prevent long-term negative consequences.
