Exploring Culture

I really enjoyed learning about the cultural similarities and differences
between Spain and the United States. It was incredibly interesting to compare
college life between the two countries. I was able to compare and contrast Old
Dominion University with Universidad de Grenada.

Another cultural aspect I really enjoyed learning about were the different
Spanish holidays. My favorite was La Tomatina in Buñol. Who wouldn’t love an
hour long food fest in the name of fun, community, and tradition?

Engaging in Communities

It is important to engage with both local and global communities for so many reasons. The first that comes to mind, may be the most important. The more we engage with others, especially those who may be different to us, the more empathy and compassion we will gain. You begin to see people for who they are, and are therefore more likely to be open and willing to learn even more.

Interpersonal Communication

I have been lucky to be around so many people in my life who speak different languages. Many of my friends and acquaintances speak Spanish, and hail from different countries. I love having the ability to practice speaking Spanish with them, even if I still need a lot of help!

Presentational Speaking

My favorite video that we completed for class was the one I created to explain my favorite people – my daughters! They are such wonderful kids, and I love that I was able to connect with fellow students by presenting my family to them!

Presentational Writing

I really enjoyed engaging with the other students in the discussion board posts. We got to research an aspect of Spanish culture that we found interesting, and then see what others thought. It is fascinating to learn what peaks others’ interests!

Interpretive Listening

I have always enjoyed listening to music in Spanish. There are so many groups and musicians that I have enjoyed over the years, but Selena Quintanilla is definitely a favorite! It can be hard to understand some of the lyrics – especially with how fast some can sing. However, this class has helped elevate both my vocabulary and my listening comprehension.

Interpretive Reading

In the beginning of the semester, we were given the task of researching social media platforms in Spanish speaking countries around the world. Once the data was collected, we were then instructed to interpret and compare the data. It was incredible to see how these figures compared, not only between the Spanish speaking countries, but with the United States as well.
