Describe three ways that computers have made the world safer and less safe.
Computers have impacted the world both positively and negatively. One positive impact of computers is accessibility since, in many circumstances, computers have proven to be very adaptive. For example, online communications. Computers have achieved ways for communication to be available, whenever you’re using an app or website, it offers a variety of ways to establish a connection with others. With that being said, having online communications can be extremely beneficial if you are in a troubled position where you can’t access a phone. Or voice out frustrations you have with others, it offers a platform where individuals are free to discuss any topic with anyone worldwide. But at the same time can be detrimental, online communications can be used for malicious intent, such as harassment, bullying, threats, etc. Also, many cyber criminals can install spyware, which can track your communication and activities with others.
Another impact of computers and their role in keeping us safe is investing in cybersecurity. The majority of computers and apps have components of cybersecurity, thus ensuring that we are safe when engaging online. Such as suggesting adding a username and a complex password or tracking any suspicious behaviors. The downside of cybersecurity is it can be really expensive if wanting to invest these methods into businesses. Also, some cyber attacks can be extremely strong and complex, which in turn will completely override your system. It is always best to invest in authentication or blockchain technology to aid in securing your information. For example, installing anti-virus/malware software, scans and detects any viruses and then eliminates it. Or following a cybersecurity framework and applying it to everyday life.
Social media platforms are integrated into many users’ daily lives, we can also examine how social media settings and controls give us options to keep safe. First is privacy settings, many users have the option to create their accounts publicly or privately, basically controlling who is allowed to see their posts, comments, and interactions. Another safety precaution we can observe is placing moderation and restrictions on certain posts. This feature can help filter out any harmful content such as hate speech, disturbing images, etc. There are also reporting systems in place, this application allows users to be able to report certain things, such as abuse, harassment, spam, etc. The downside though is a lot of these platforms can be hacked and information can be stolen. Also, many social media programs can be used with malicious intent, whenever it’s inflicting harm to others on social media or posting offensive content (saying or performing damaging context).
