SPAN 102

Instructions

Over the semester I used spanish dictionary to help with words but mainly class was the most useful for cultural perspectives. Lingrohub used a lot of confusing words so it was more helpful being in class and hearing Professor Rocio explain it and tell her perspective.

Hearing values and cultures from other countries helped me understand how their countries may run. A lot of spanish speaking countries are very family based. When reading their perspectives on their culture they brought up family a lot. I think in america it is different for each family, where in spanish speaking countries it feels like that is a consistent theme throughout their country. I didn’t really have a stereotype going in, I have met many people from other countries so I did not even an assumption.

Engaging in Communities

In America we find it important to talk with your community and help out people in need. We find it important to talk with people from different countries and learn new things.

Interpersonal Communication

I enjoyed talk abroad a lot, I felt like I got to see people my age or close who live in other countries. I liked how kind they were and compassionate to me even though I struggle with speaking spanish. They were very kind and able to help me when I needed.

Outside of talk abroad I had projects where I had to speak or listen. When talking to others it helps me process what’s said and try and piece together what to say. It helped put my knowledge to the test and try to quickly see what i knew or not. Even in talk abroad, i wrote key words and phrases to remember but when it happened, there were questions I didn’t expect and had to adjust.

Presentational Speaking

Speaking in a presentational capacity was nerve racking. I didn’t have to speak in front of my entire class, but having to make videos was scary. When the video played to the whole class, I kinda slumped in my chair trying not to look.

When doing the videos my biggest challenge was nerves, I was scared to mess up or mispronounce something. I was became really good at finding words to describe things. For example my food project, I used words we did not really use much.

Presentational Writing.

This semester I worked on a flyer and a infographic. They were not too complicated other than the in person writing.

The most difficult part of it all was doing the rough draft in class and then only being able to use that. It was hard going in with ideas and then forgetting it all knowing you cannot improve it. Getting the edits back made making the project way easier. I did a good job at being able to make a nice project. Once I got the hang of how to study it better I did way better.

Interpretive Listening

Over the semester I had listening activities from LingroLearning. They were mainly to see if you knew the connotation they were using.

Each listening activity helped me see where I was at. I could read spanish relatively ok, if i couldn’t understand it all i could at least understand key words. Listening to it made me have to really pay attention to the words being used. I could pick out keywords but i had to remember the words also used around it. When i read it i could reread it if i truly needed but if I was listening I had to listen two to three times to truly hear it all.

Interpretive Reading

Over this semester I did not read many articles in spanish, but i decided to read some. I read an article for beginners about the most visited website in each country.

I decided to do it because I wanted to see my progress in where I was understanding spanish. I did not do great but over time I to a place where I was understanding a little better. I was able to find key words and decipher sentences better than before. I am not great at spanish but in reading the article I am becoming a little bit better than before.
