The Association for Library Service to Children is a part of the American Library Association. This is a national level blog for librarians who work with youth and need to be aware of current and new services and resources. I plan to be a school librarian, and this is a wonderful place to find new information that can be utilized in a school setting. I tune in to blogs for future ideas.

The School Library Journal

The School Library Journal is a website where you can find a plethora of information about school library.  News and features, reviews, school library, censorship, public libraries, classroom, diversity, blogs, and events are all topics covered on this site. The diversity tab features great articles that provide opportunities to discuss important topics in today’s society. This will be a go to site for questions about the best way to deal with sensitive topics.

The Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning and Testing

The Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning and Testing site is one every teacher and librarian uses often.  This is a go to site to find SOLs for each subject area and grade level, to find resources for each  standard, and to find lesson plans for teaching them. I use this site weekly for planning guidance.

The Adventures of Library Girl

The Adventures of Library Girl is a blog by Jennifer LaGarde. She has over 20 years of experience in many facets of public education. She covers many topics, but I have especially enjoyed her most recent blogs that deal with issues like LGBTQ Graphic Novels and how to approach challenges to ban books in libraries. I think it is very important to look at certain topics with a fresh perspective.

The Virginia Library Association

The Virginia Library Association is an excellent resource for keeping up with issues being dealt with and updates in school libraries across the state of Virginia.  They list conferences and events beneficial to librarians.  A highlight of the site is the jobs and career tab that shows statewide opportunities in school and public libraries. This site will help me stay up to date with what librarians across the state are doing.

Kirkus Reviews

Kirkus Reviews is a site that has book reviews, book recommendations, information on authors, and new releases. It is a great resource to use for finding new books to add to a library. Book reviews are instrumental in deciding which books to read and the age or reading level of the material.  There are featured podcasts and videos as well. I use the reviews now to choose books to use in my classroom.

The American Association of School Librarians

The American Association of School Librarians is a division of the ALA. There is a great deal of information that is beneficial to school librarians.  You can find a conference on a subject that interests you.  There is a portal with many resources used to support implementation of AALA standards. You can also find news articles that keep you updated on library happenings. I will use this to assist me in creating lesson plans.

Facebook School Librarians Group

The Facebook School Librarians Group is one of many groups for school librarians.  There are people from all over the country who work in school libraries and have great ideas. You can find ideas about things like book ordering, bulletin board themes, labeling ideas, and library classroom management. There are also links to information about book tours and online workshops. It is refreshing to speak to people who are already in a librarian position.

Knowledge Quest

The Virginia Association of School Librarians is an organization that is invaluable to school librarians in Virginia. You can pay to join the organization which allows you to attend the annual conferences for a discounted price. You can choose your region to see what others around you are doing in their libraries. You can explore other regions as well. You can stay updated with the happenings in Virginia, see awards available to librarians and the winners of these awards, connect with others in the profession, and learn how to advocate for Virginia school libraries.

The Library Voice

The Library Voice is a professional blog run by Shannon McClintock Miller, who is a an international speaker, consultant, and author. This blog offers numerous ideas for resources that can be used in school libraries that encourage reading and technology use for education. You can also find ideas for choice boards that can be used for holidays and special occasions.

The Trapped Librarian
