SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

The different products and practices that has helped me gain some knowledge is the online Spanish book, Google and speaking to different people about their background. The Spanish book online gives the opportunity to search different cultures through the sections in the learning Modules and Google allows an endless search for exploring culture. Giving the opportunity to speak to different people about their background also has allowed me to gain different perspectives.

I think between having an online book, google and being able to speak with different people about their cultures has allowed me to expand my knowledge and values. These products challenged my worldview by giving me a broader outlook on how they live their daily life, and celebrate different cultures. I think the stereotypical thoughts were never there in general but seeing and hearing about for instance how they all have different times for siesta and the day of the dead in Mexico was quite interesting.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in your immediate community and the global community is important because you are allowing yourself to grow with everyone around you and experience different opinions.

Interpersonal Communication

This semester I have completed three in person written assignments that have allowed me to test my knowledge on understanding the subject. In chapter two, three and four I have completed an interview with either a classmate, my professor or just myself. In these interviews the act of speaking was with anywhere from basic communication to describing my whole week. Outside of class I have been able to communicate with my hispanic roommate and speak to my family in simple sentences learned all through this course.

Each assignment that I have completed in this course has allowed me to spontaneously speak to some of the people around me. I also have been to understand some conversations that are out in public. I strongly believe each assignment that I have gone through in this course has allowed me to practice and slowly grasp enough information to carry on my Spanish with either my degree or in my future travels. Some difficulties that I have struggled with in this class is pronouncing long words or even sentences that require thought. In this case, I think I would practice more and ask for help when needed.

Presentational Speaking

This semester I have completed an interview with a classmate all on basic conversations about how we were doing, where we are from and are majors. Further in this term I had to show my favorite activities and places I go on the regular. Below is a recording from the beginning of the course in chapter two.

In this video my classmate Taylor and I completed an interview all based on the assignment. I think that I have excelled in my expressions and my pronunciation.

Presentational Writing

During this class, I have completed two in-person presentational writing which has tested my knowledge of the subject. The first one was about basic information on myself which included mental health The second in-person assignment was all based on my week and the use of Preterit and Present verbs. Below is a copy of the second assignment.

Each assignment that I have talked about allowed me to grow by learning vocabulary, verbs, converting ar, ir, and er endings and understanding the different conjugations when it comes to a sentence. I think what became easier was understanding words in english and then knowing the word in Spanish. What became difficult was all the different verbs that are out there to describe what I am doing. I still am overcoming learning each verb but the best method I have acquired was flashcards.

Interpretive Listening

This semester I have learned how to point out direction with actions and words, view different areas and described them and finally, write a letter of appreciation with the use of all the vocabulary.

The different things I have listened to this semester is different pronunciation that was used on the online textbook and videos that I found on youtube. The most challenging section of this term was converting the endings of the different verbs. I overcame this difficulty by going through each practice section and writing the word over and over. I honestly believe that this whole semester has been interesting. Learning a new language in general has always been so fascinating to me. Below is a video that has helped me with understanding how to pronounce L’s and Y’s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTFgCS01Y7k

Throughout this semester I was given the opportunity to read Spanish in and out of class either that being simple sentences that my professor put up on the board or through the online book.
