My intended major is dental hygiene and I chose this major because it’s always been interesting to me since I had my braces. I got my braces in middle school and I’ve always been curious about what they would do whenever I went to the orthodontist or dentist. I also chose this major because the work schedule is great to me. You don’t have to work on holidays and most offices don’t work on Fridays. A skill that I have that helps me choose this major is that I have really good memorization skills and I’m a fast learner when it comes to hands-on activities. Experiences that I can relate to are the ones that I had during votech (vocational school). I took the dental careers course for two years during high school. Those two years really helped me in a way that I was determined to become a dentist or orthodontist. We had clinics and labs as well that helped me. I prefer to work in a private dental office that only sees adults because kids are not my preference. My career goals in the next five or ten years is to become a dentist and work at my uncle’s office. As I work as a dentist I hopefully will go into orthodontics and go back to school for that specialization. Of the majors on my top ten list, I would definitely choose health service administration because there are so many paths you could take within this field.
As I’m transitioning from high school to college the biggest difference for me is that my schedule is all over the place and I have more freedom and responsibilities. My biggest challenge this semester is to be organized with my load work. It’s just something about having my classes spread out that makes it a bit harder to keep up with assignments. I think my biggest challenge staying at home is that I won’t be able to attend events right then and there. As we all as I will be missing out on the social aspect of being on campus. I currently have a job at Target and I only work on the weekends. Hopefully during winter break I can work at a dental office as well. I work probably 10 to 15 hours a week.
