When I looked at my first blog this semester, I think that most of my initial course expectations did end up matching with the actual outcome. I definitely developed a good understanding of how we are affected by other people and groups, as well as how to apply this to social problems and group dynamics. I also was able to stay on schedule and study the necessary material each week. I did procrastinate some at the beginning of the semester, so if I took the class again, I would try to avoid this. However, I think I improved as the semester went on and it helped me work on a new skill by learning better time management. I think the only thing that did not happen was getting extra assistance from my professor if needed, but this was just because I did not have a reason to contact her.
One way that I grew academically was learning more about how relationships effect our lives, and they also can show a lot about what we prioritize. My attitudes about social psychology have changed some, especially considering I was not very informed about this branch of psychology before taking the course. I think it is a very important piece of this field that helps you understand the overall picture of what is going on in our society and the connections we have with each other, as well as the reasons behind it. I chose this picture because it shows how it feels to manage a lot at the same time, and I feel like this was something I improved on a lot this semester.

The top three things that I learned so far in this course include the information from assignment 2, assignment 4, and blog 7. Assignment 2 allowed me to explore my identity and come to the realization that every part of me is important and makes up who I am overall. Assignment 4 helped me understand my priorities in relationships, and it allowed me see how this may affect my personal life moving forward. Blog 7 taught me a lot about the connection between self-regulation and emotional intelligence, while also showing me how to implement these behaviors in real life scenarios. The information from blog 7 could also be applied to the information in assignment 4, and it helped me gain a better understanding of it as well. My reactions in my relationships can improve through implementing better self-regulation into my own life. The ideas of self-regulation and emotional intelligence that were discussed were also related to another concept that I discussed in physiological psychology when learning how to regulate stress and manage emotions. This visual image captures my organizational process, because I related a lot of other topics to this particular one.

This article made me think about how men and women do often differ in their preferences, but how they share a lot of the same ones as well. Men upset women through their jealousy, impatience, harassment, temper, laziness, dishonesty, and lack of outward expression of emotion. Women upset men by overthinking, nagging, victimizing themselves, assuming the worst, having hidden intentions, and projecting insecurities. I would say that conflict happens from both ends due to jealousy and projection from both genders. Deception also seems to be a common tactic that both men and women use, even if it is for different rewards. I also think that certain habits when living together can cause conflict, such as one person not prioritizing cleanliness as much as the other. I feel like men and women can engage in any of these behaviors, but those are ones I see quite often from both.

The relationship between self-regulation and emotional intelligence involves the idea that you can better regulate your decisions by understanding your emotions. What we feel is very important and affects how we think. Personally, emotional intelligence means to understand and manage my emotions so I can make a decision and have an appropriate response. Being able to self-regulate can help you deescalate emotions and make wiser choices. Paying attention to your feelings and what your judgements are before making a choice is a good display of emotional intelligence. An example of how emotional intelligence can be improved is by practicing strategies such as breathing exercises, which can help get you back down from a fight or flight response. I like to breathe in and breathe out, increasing the counts between each breath. You can also do a body scan where you visualize breathing into places of tension throughout your body.
This image is a screenshot of my results from an emotional intelligence test I took, and I scored a 78 on it.

This video opened my eyes to the harmful language that ads often use to get people, particularly women, to buy their products. I previously had an idea of this based on ads I have seen before, especially when it comes to skin and photoshop techniques. However, this video allowed me to see more specific examples of how dehumanizing certain comments and treatment can be. I also did not have as much knowledge on how men’s bodies are often edited, such as making them look more muscular. The first ad was selected because it minimizes women to their ability to clean and their physical appearance. It is supposed to be an advertisement for a cleaning product but does not say much about the product itself. Instead, it focuses on how it can help maintain a women’s low weight and uses a stereotype as their selling point. The second ad was selected because it uses a comparison between women and a cigarette. Not only is it comparing a woman to an object, but also says she is best if she is thin. The third ad was selected because it is hinting at the idea that women are unintelligent, saying that they are still able to open the bottle so it must be a good product. The fourth ad was selected because it says, “that’s what wives are for” when discussing cooking. It is acting like that is only a job for women which is a harmful stereotype, but also that cooking is the reason wives are even there. The fifth ad was selected because it shows a pear to describe a body shape that they are saying is unfit for a woman. This comparison and language was meant to shame women and it is very harmful.

There are many different types of sources in advertising. The first picture is a credible source, the second is a non credible source, and the third is an attractive source. The credible source is professional and educational. It lets you know about their product and provides trust. The non credible source is of a dentist recommending cigarettes. This was so people would continue to smoke even though it could be at risk for their health, just because the filter may have the chance of being a little healthier. The attractive source uses a celebrity, Jennifer Aniston, to represent their brand of water. There is not as much information about the actual product, but they hope to draw you in with the picture. I often get pulled in by these type of attractive ads as well, because they are connected to someone I admire.

This exam went very well and I got a 100, but I still feel like I can work on starting to study earlier so I can continue to be prepared. I am going to start setting aside certain days of the week to focus on reviewing, and I will be marking these in my planner. I think my strategy with note taking has been working pretty well, but I will be going through the review topics more thoroughly next time. I took most of the 75 minutes to finish the exam, so I can also work on my time management. I am able to focus a lot easier when I am not rushing to answer the questions at the end. I think my other psychology classes have helped give me an introduction to a lot of the material, but there are new things I have to spend more time reviewing.
I included a picture of my planner, because it allows me to stay structured and stay on schedule. It will also help me decide which days are best to review.

I think the connection between music and relationships allows us to see a peak into each others values as well. I definitely pay attention to which people in my life have similarities in music taste, especially potential friends and partners. I would say that the majority of the people I am around and share music taste with do have a lot of the same views and ideals as me. Not only has it allowed us to share something in common, but it also deepens our relationship.
I associate “Don’t Know Why” by Nora Jones with my mom because we used to always listen to her on the way home from school. Additionally, “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King reminds me of my dad because he would sing it in the kitchen when I was younger. I also think of the song “8TEEN” by Khalid when reminiscing on times with my friends from high school because we listened to it a lot my senior year and the lyrics were about being our age. I think about the song “Still” by Seinabo Sey when looking back on my walks around campus in the mornings and it reminds me to stay calm and hopeful for the future. “Blue World” by Mac Miller reminds me of going to the beach after work last year with one of my best friends. “Say Hey” by Michael Franti and Spearhead reminds me of my brother because singing it with him always boosts my mood. I think it reminds us to take things a little less seriously and focus on spreading love, and we both have similar views on this.

I think I am a motivated student, because I am excited for my future career. However, I have noticed there have been a lot more challenges to overcome throughout the pandemic, especially as a student. Last year I transferred to ODU and after my first semester, I had a 4.0 so this helped my confidence. It has been a difficult transition to taking classes online, but I have learned that time management is a huge factor. Planning out your weeks in a planner and keeping track as you go makes it a lot easier to stay on track. I think if I can continue to get more involved and do well in my classes this semester it will help build my determination to succeed. I got a total score of 32 and a mean score of 3.2. This was a pretty high score indicating higher perceived general self-efficacy.

The course objectives in the syllabus will assist me by explaining exactly how I should be learning to apply the information we are going over. My expectations in this course are to develop a good understanding of how we are affected by other people and groups, and I also expect to be able to contact my professor if I may need some assistance throughout the course. I hope to gain more knowledge about how psychology can be applied to social problems and group dynamics. I intend to stay on schedule, refrain from procrastinating, and study the necessary material each week.
I chose this cartoon because it related to the topic of heuristics and how our thinking can be influenced.
